A new take on music threads
« on: April 14, 2009, 04:34:34 pm »
Okay. So far all music-threads have dulled out within a few days, because people are too lazy asses to check out the bands recommended, or it's already something mainstream that everyone knows, and so on, and so on. In short, they blew.

So here's a new, more productive angle for it.

Taken your average demographics, most of you listen to some sort of rock or metal, some of you listen to hip-hop, a smaller portion goes with various electronics. The majority of you is still content with the more easily accessible mainstream music (this is not necessarily derogatory, just a fact), and most of you can't be arsed to find something new either.

So, I'm going to help you out!

I'll post a short description of an album that should be equally awesome for most of you, because it's either the cream of it's genre, or captures a mood like no other does, or maybe it had a huge impact on music as we know it. There will be ones that are easier to like, and there will be stuff that's harder to digest, but all in all, you're not losing anything by listening to it.

To keep it simple, I will post an album, then wait for around 5-7 comments regarding it. Once we're done with it, I'll post another one, and so on, and so on. If anyone of you has something awesome to share (and please, no mainstream stuff, we've all heard those before), send me a PM, I'll check it out, and we can have a go at that too.

Also, I don't give much of a flying fuck on how you acquire the albums. The music industry is more of a dead-weight on the neck of artists, and nobody is really getting harmed by piracy - in fact, some of the bands may actually profit from it, incase you later decide to buy their album, merch, or go to their gig.

All ready?

Fugazi was a post-hardcore band formed by former members of the infuental hardcore group Rites of Spring. Incase you're unfamiliar with the genre, it's still keeping the hard lines and ethics of punk (D.I.Y., political issues and fine drawn lines on their stance), but it's slowed down, with longer and less aggressive songs. The vocals still range from harder to softer melodies, but it's neither really disharmonic or annoying, and the drums aren't there to blast your speakers away either, with guitars painting awesome moods without any real solos. 13 songs is a collection of their first two EP-s, and it gives you a very good overview of this genre, and can draw you in to a whole new pool of guitar-happy music. Punk never died, it just transformed, and Fugazi are a better product of that process. It also hails from 1989, released months after I was born, and the band itself with it's hardline ars poetica and strong backbone has influenced many others to grab some instruments and make music, forever injecting themselfes into the vein of modern music. Recommended ages 14+.

Never listened a lot to them. But it's a shame they're on hiatus
They sound like everything was recorded live. And I have more of the same genre ;)

The official forum stance on piracy is a big fat no, so I'm not giving you a link - but it's not really rocket science getting an album down from the internet, now is it.

You should also add some links to songs on that album (or made by the band) that you would
recommend.

Not everyone would like everything made by a band, I think.

EDIT:

Someone else should be in charge of other genre also. Unless you are a great critique that listens to all genre.

fine, I embedded a sample song above the album front picture, but if people give me their opinion after 20 seconds of a 30 minute + album I'm going to hurt you all

edit: also yeah, I plan to do more genres obviously, being fairly open-minded

I was never a fan of hardcore/punk stuff. The guitars are just too boring. Power chords get old fast when they're all that's used. Also, the singers tend to suck at singing. Music should be made because of a person's love for music, not because of some political issue or whatever.

Strangely I've heard this album before and I didn't like it then either.

I only like the song 'Waiting Room' and that was purely for the intro bass line. Not a big fan of Fugazi, I just can't seem to like it.

I'm gonna download it and hear it all. I like listening to new bands. I'll tell you what I think later on.

EDIT: The rhythm is nice, in general its music it's good but they fail at singing, you can't almost hear them, as iDante said.

Foxy Shazam - Introducing Foxy Shazam

If there's one thing I resent about 2008, it's completely overlooking this album. Foxy Shazam are a powerball on a roll, and Introducing... is their second album. The genre is nigh' undefinable, as they incorporate pianos, synthesizers, rolling riffs and traditional go-happy drums - but the real thing that gets you here is the vocals. Eric Sean Nally uses his voice on various scales with real profession, and this wild bunch of madmen is maybe the best thing to happen in rock and roll since the Queen. I'm obviously biased this time, because the record has been stuck in my playlist for days now, but if you overlook their pseudo-silly, not to be taken seriously image, you'll soon be coming back for more and more too. Click for the freakshow! (the other songs are more powerfull)

It has a fairly big band feel with... different lyrics. Its not so much my style but it certainly isn't as unpleasant as many new things. Its really not bad to be honest. (I just watched a couple youtube videos)

/first post fugazi is awesome, so is rites of spring.

on the second band i'll check them out, from what i read it reminds me of Frank Zappa, but with less humor in it.

Please, don't just check out a few youtube vids, because the point here is to check out the whole album, as the artist intended it to happen. These aren't radio-hit bands.

@ Niko: Get The Argument from them, 2002, or a whole discography isn't hard to find either.
