Now, in V. 1.5 I find that the steyr is far less powerful because even though it does more damage and has a faster reload speed (I think), the lack of 5 extra bullets really sucks.
Its got a +1 damage (from 73 to 74) and reduced self-bink (from -22 to -19), as well as -5 ammo (from 30 to 25), no changes to anything else. Those are the changes.
Consistent from 1.4.2, would be fireinterval 7 (that's rather fast and causes bullets to fire at a slightly upward angle from 2nd automatic shot onwards - so the first bullet fired by the Aug is generally seen as inaccurate), reload 115 + 7FI (that's rather fast), bullet sped 260 (pretty straight bullets) and movementacc 2 (required so that the Aug does not become too accurate).
I think that the Aug isn't as bad as it seems. Compared to other weapons, the Aug (being an auto) is pretty easy to use, yet amazingly effective because it not only has a good DOT (Damage Over Time), it fires relatively fast (more tolerant to missing than slower-firing weapons while not compromising too much DOT). The Aug has pretty good accuracy too, especially in the right hands, in addition to the fact that it has a pretty long range.
The problem is that, the Aug has a very small ammo supply (25) and it runs out very fast. It takes 9 ammo to kill a Soldaten, but in practical situations, you'd probably use up 11 if you are very accurate and much more if you aren't, plus the lag. This is a major weakness of the Aug - it is only able to effectively take on 1 full-health person and 1 injured consecutively, but not beyond that. This applies without grenades - add in grenades and you can kill more. Sure, it has a fast-reload, but given the pace of Soldat, once you reload, you'd be dead.
The -5 ammo was necessary, otherwise the Aug would remain overpowered - simple to use, great versatility and strong DOT backed by an over-sized ammo supply enough to kill 2 full-health people consecutively (without nades) and spray - it would be the ultimate weapon in Soldat. Don't forget the 75% bullet push - without that change, the Aug-user would also be capable of manipulating his opponents' movements, making it impossible to pass through an Aug defense at choke points; this also encourages slower and defensive gameplay, which is contrary to the goal of making Soldat fast-paced and offensive.
Now users turn away from the Aug after the -5 ammo mainly from either lack of skill/accuracy, or from strong psychological impact derived from the former. The Aug is still one of the better weapons in Soldat, with or without nades in the server. The only real differences, the 75% bullet push and users are just forced to be more accurate by their own aiming ability rather than by bullet guidance and be extra watchful of their ammo.
