Im a noob and i need help
« on: July 22, 2009, 01:15:16 am »
i've been playing this game on and off for a long time but i can never get good, the last time i asked how i can improve myself in the game i got the replies off:  "quit" "suck dick" and "experience"  now i can see how experience can play in but i cant even get the basics down, how do you successfully shoot people?  when it seems like im aiming right at them it doesnt hit htem and i get killed instantly, any help/tips/advice would be great.

inb4 noob, fuck off, gtfo of my soldat etc. :-\

1) Never place the crosshair directly at the enemy, but over him.

It is because of the "Bullet drop" which means that the bullets fly at a parabola, which means that they slowly fall down, which is rather rarely found in games, so that you need some time to train that, i recommend that you sometimes play against bots to learn how it works.
(In the attachment is the corsshair which i made for training purposes, place it in the Interface-gfx folder)

2) Learn to use jets and similar maneuvers.

It is essential that you know how to avoid getting killed by a enemy, and it works best by using some of these maneuvers:
- Backflip- Hold the jump button (default "W") and movement key (default "A" OR "D") that is opposed to the side you are facing and then press the jet button (default right mouse button)
- Roll- Hold the movement key of the side you are facing (default "A" OR "D") and press the crouch button (default "S")
- Backroll- Hold the movement key that is opposed to the side you are facing (default "A" OR "D") and press the crouch button (default "S")

That would be the beginner ones, for the others you should experiment (to train that, i suggest going on climb map server, which are hard though, but they are good for movement training)

3) Learn the map layout on which are you playing, so you can find paths that are better to go with.

4) Read of some the tutorials and guides found here, as it it good to learn how to use some weapons.
Here are some:
STM1993's Simple Weapons Guide [Normal]
Rai Dei's Guide to the Desert Eagles.
Pro Tips

Good luck, and rembemer- The most of this you will learn by experience, but if you get some tips, try them as they might help you.

Go to your bot folder, copy and paste 20+ Boogie Mans. Or what ever the defaults called.

Practice against them. I've played most days for a couple of years, and I still have fun practicing against Boogie Man, or Zombies.... It'll help your aiming, and maneuvers, without being shot so much.

I played against bots for several months before I even realized multiplayer.

Also, CTF is probably the best gametype.
And pay attention to which servers you join.
Different servers have different difficulties.

Also, if you need help, try asking for it a clan member, as he can show you more than the usual soldat player, and they are usually more communicative than the rest.

edit:
Also, there are 3 types of weapon mods in the game:
-Normal- You need to watch for bink.
-Realistic- Bink exists, but recoil is the main thing you have to watch for, it has fall damage, careful when making jumps from high altitudes.
-Custom- The way how the weapons shoot is modified, and as such it can be unique, so that you dont know how it is until you try it, such servers have the (WM) prefix usually.

If you want to become good, as in competitive, playing against bots is going to do nothing. Bots are predictable and if you keep playing them, you can kill them before they even appear on your screen. Bots cannot think, make decisions and do different unpredictable things like an average human. All you will learn from playing bots is the basic (maybe even not), like movement and aim. You will not learn teamwork which is core for any clan.

Bots are good for learning a weapons pros and cons, and also learning how to aim, as he stated in the first post that he cant hit the enemies.

If he is just beginning to play soldat, bots are a good way to learn how to get basic weapon training.

Also, there is a thing in soldat called "eating", which is generally that you get hit by a bullet/grenade but survive without taking any damage.
It happens randomly, so you better put one bullet more in your enemy.

Learn what "short-form" commands mean. Stuff like EFC, eb and pit.
Anyone play KOL?

1)
- Backflip- Hold the jump button (default "W") and movement key (default "A" OR "D") that is opposite the side you are facing and then press the jet button (default right mouse button)
- Roll- Hold the movement key of any one side (default "A" OR "D") and press the crouch button (default "S")
Backflip is the most important one here.

2) Try to stick with a weapon and get used to it for a while instead of just using it once and then changing to another gun. Notice that when you shoot, the bullets take time to travel to the direction you are aiming at. Also, your bullets do not travel straight, they tend to curve downwards due to gravity. Learn how the bullet of your gun curves. When you aim, estimate how your bullet would travel instead of aiming directly at someone, and adjust accordingly. Then you shoot.

If you are using an automatic weapon like an AK (usually recommended for starters), you might want to use the bullets you have initially fired to correct your aim. When you get better, this won't be necessary as you can estimate the bullet's curve without aid.

Note: every weapon has a different curve and the bullets may be slower for some.

3) I don't recommend playing with bots. Try playing in some public deathmatch games first to learn your basic fighting skills, because bots are too predictable.

4) DO NOT join servers with a (WM) behind their names. They are weapon mods, meaning they use modified weapons. They won't help you get any better with the original guns.

Well, you should start off with a simple gun like the Steyr. Then find a simple deathmatch server or teammatch. If you plan to get good, the most important part is your attitude. Keep a positive attitude and don't give up.  ;)
