Whats the chance!
« on: October 12, 2010, 01:46:07 am »
I have a friend that works on a cleaning crew, cleans all different buildings.

One day he was just messing around and he used his apartment to try to open the library door, and the key fit and worked. and it actually looked the same!

i couldn't believe it, because the library opened years before he even got a apartment ....

Whats the chance of that!!!

assuming it was a standard issue key like the one shown on this webpage: http://www.jstor.org/pss/3613451
one could safely say the number of different keys is equal to 7^6=117649

The odds would then be 1:117649, but as the website states, if N1 and N3 equal 7, N2 could NEVER equal 1.

BTW, that website states that the number of different keys equals 6^7, but this is false.

It's not exactly as exciting as winning the lottery, but still, the odds are pretty slim.

Now, what I'm wondering is, what are the odds that this is a true story?

As always, 0.000000000001^10%.

Not too crazy, if the lock is old, and some of the pins are dirty or worn out.

Looser plug, stuck pins etc. etc.

Also possible, if popped it in the bump-key manner, it may work.  Lucky if that though.
