I need a quick test audience!
« on: February 09, 2011, 11:01:05 am »
Im calling on your agility and reflexes to get some final test data! RC2 offers a bunch of upgrades, including powerups, traps and achievements. So Run the Gauntlet and show me some new high scores!

Have fun!
I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn’t work that way. So I stole a bike and then asked for forgiveness.

Maybe it's my end, but it would appear to be lacking vertical sync or at least it looks like that (distorted in a certain way). I also noticed that the effect of the red 'bonus' was not cumulative when reacquired during the flipped mode (intentional?).

The tutorial should probably go over the different traps...
Unless it's meant to be a surprise, I know I was surprised when the screen flipped on me :|

Cheers guys!

I wanted to know how a group of people would react to the 'traps' with minimal prior knowledge of them. Now I have a pretty good idea of where the balancing needs to be done, and what to add to the tutorial.

Since Im not totally cruel, Ill explain the current power-ups;

green - bonus 10,000 points.
blue - randomizes all bits + 1000 points for each bit randomized.
purple - induces Power Dash at no cost.
yellow - detonates all bits + 1000 points for each bit detonated.
red - inverts the screen for 3 secs or until hurt. Survive inverted for 3 seconds for a bonus 20,000 points.

1) What are the circles at the top of the screen?
2) I'm not sure if the automatic power dash is really a good thing.  It seems like it would be, but it moves you more right (shortened reaction time) while not adding to your combo, so...

I'd say the circles stand for level progression (one circle per level or one circle per bit exponent in the bonus level). Edit2: I must've misinterpreted the term circle when answering this at first, you probably meant the inner circles for which I don't have an explanation.

Edit: At the automatic dash - the manual dash doesn't add to the combo either; also if you feel this bonus has a negative effect you may go for the tactical choice of jumping over those boxes.

1) The circles represent the current and past level progression. They will light up when you complete a level. If you completed a level without getting hurt,  you get a stealth bonus and it will light up green permanently. Light them all up green to unlock Stealth Mode. The green bar itself tracks the current progression, while a blue bar will track the highest progress recorded on the client. In the Bonus Stage the progression indicators work in a similar way, and remember your past achievements.

2) Firstly, your hit points are represented by how far you are up the screen. Secondly, the further up the screen, the more points you get per bit. Thirdly, bypassing bits increases your hit points. You basically get a bigger payoff for having less reaction time.

Now the Auto-Dash powerup is more of a temp invincibility. Auto-Dash or not, everything you break through is increasing your health, and giving you points based on your health and combo. When you do a Dash manually however, it costs you 10 combo points, so you need to keep your combos up to keep using it. Auto-Dash is a pure chance bonus that gives you health, score, makes you invulnerable, doesnt drain your combo score and gives you a few seconds rest.

The only thing I dont like is this powerup appears a bit too frequently sometimes.

Probably to do with the fact that in RC2, the levels will not start over again from green after purple and bonus level (if the condition of 50x combo is met) is automatically initiated - stumbling at the end of the purple(the last) level seems to get me stuck as no new blocks are generated and neither is the game ended.
Edit: I also noticed that if doing a 50+ combo in the tutorial you will get the bonus mode regardless of the maximum combo in the actual game following the tutorial.
Edit2: Also right-clicking on the game while in the main menu makes the hand of the character appear with an offset while the context-menu is open.

#1 Cant replicate the end game bug as yet, finding it difficult to get to the last bit in the right situation. If anybody else can explore this one Id much appreciate it.

#2 Thanks for that one, Ill patch that gaping hole pronto!
OK this one is fixed

#3 This is to do with translating mouse coordinates from root level to within relative objects - where the finger anchors normally is actually an offset value already. I suppose I can fix this but its a bit tedious.
This one is being a real pain. Flash is, well, retarded when it comes to the context menu - it doesnt fire any useful events, so I built my own function to disable the 'hand' movement when the menu is opened, determine the area of the menu, and to check that the mouse was over the menu or not. Click outside this area, and the 'hand' behaves normally and the cursor re-hides. Works absolutely perfectly standalone, but goes super spastic when embedded on a page for some reason. Ill try to get to the bottom of this.

I'm afraid I haven't yet managed to reproduce the 'getting stuck' bug (perhaps a bit-counter would be of use for debugging purposes, so a tester would know that the upcoming piece is the last bit), but in other notes -
When completing the last level, the game still says "Level up".
Also I would find optionality of the additional GUI elements (XP per bit display, bit-accompanying arrows at first levels(, which alternatively could perhaps be displayed only after the tutorial and maybe a few first times for a new player)) to be of use for slightly increased performance (I assume) and less distraction.
Edit: Firstly, it would appear that the bit-power based attack (Shift) activates the bonus blocks (at least when the block's the next one to be avoided)
But most importantly, it would appear the stumble at last bit is not stumble at last bit after all, it just unfortunately occurred at that point for me the first time; it would appear, making a (wrong) move very shortly after gaining the automated power-dash could result in getting stuck (managed to replicate a couple of times).
I've added a descriptive video, the footage is taken after the initial stumble though. Also note the level number and the level indicator above and also the effect of using manual power dash (not sure, how on that occasion the combo remained after the stumble).

Strange, I thought I'd fixed this one a while ago. Will look into it.

The difficult thing is making it easy for the stupid yet not boring for people who are not. The slow recession of arrows was a final solution to make the gameplay instinct, but I think you may be right in that it needs to disable after you have seen them vanish.

This was originally a bug, but I found that it presented no negative effect, if anything it provided an opportunity to gain points - like making the inverted stream easier for example.

I need more information on what you mean by 'making a wrong move after gaining the power-dash'. What exactly are you doing to replicate this? Are you getting hurt right as you initiate the Power-Dash?

Yes, I press a 'wrong' movement key right after I have hit the power-dash bonus bit (hasn't happened with 'manual' power-dash) (also, it requires the next bit to be close enough, I suppose, so you could actually stumble).

I can see how me calling this "gaining the automated power-dash" would create confusion ... excuse my wording-failure : ]
