But is it an over all linux downfall (or just my mistake), or just a distro one. I know little about all this, I'm just trying to find a cheaper method of getting connected on linux.
no, it's the fault of the manufacturer of the wireless card. It isn't linux's fault that a lot of hardware only works on windows (because it was designed to only work on windows, developers never thought of making it for linux).
