Explosion Particle Effects ?
« on: September 30, 2006, 12:54:08 am »
I don't use the full effect settings on my computer (I clock in at a weak vid card and 800 mhz processor), so I wouldn't know. But is there any way to make the explosions work a little different ? Say, for example, using those sweet particles already found in /piss, jets, and miniguns.

Let's say that an explosion occurs. Instead of the usual graphic that fades in and out, you'd spontaniously generate a bunch of particles, with each having a fraction of a chance of setting someone on fire (for a limited time). Instead of getting a teeny explosion graphic, you would get a more impressive shower of 'sparks' plus the normal push-away abilities of the grenade (keeping those static as opposed to dynamic radius).

If you don't understand any of this, please ask for clarification :)

No, particles make lag.

as far as im concered, nade spam already makes a ****load of that.

nade spam + particle explosion = 1 - 15 full seconds of lag

No, particles make lag.
What's up with these people who think clientside graphical improvements will cause lag? ArmedManiac, and Cato, the most a graphical improvement will do is cause some slightly lower fps on your machine for a second or two (plus, if you don't like that concept, just turn down the graphics).

I support this, as long as it adds to the original explosion, and not replaces.

Seriosly if you dont understand computers/programming/networking please do not comment if it will cause lag or not. I like this suggestion also.

I wouldn't like the whole explosion to be particles, just a small shower to go with it. Ā

This could be improved.

If they didn't set people on fire, wouldn't they be client-side then? Maybe there could be a checkbox in the setup.exe for explosion particles, and then the amount is determined by the particle amount that should already be defined...

I like it.

The idea is to make explosions look a little prettier, I know that when I first played the game, I was dismayed to find my rocket launcher create such small carnage.

It would be a 'Setup' setting, of course, that allows the explosion to either be pre-rendered, dynamic, or both. Maybe the fire thing is a little much, I was just writing that post up there spur-of-the-moment style and didn't think about how much lag it would cause to sync all the particles up.

Hootie caught what I was saying perfectly :)

This i could deal with, perhaps just bigger booms. But the fire thing, no. Explosives are dangerous enogh as it is.
