Let me say first that I am not a map maker.

I've seen maps that have a sort of semi-transparent polygon in the foreground. One had a yellow haze that made the soldat more difficult to see, another had foggy squares. But these were all huge polygons, no artistic or realistic effect.

So...I know it would be possible to have dark yet realistic lighting instead of the exact same soldat with the exact same colors on screen. I'm thinking splinter cell now with very dramatic lighting. I have never seen a map like this.

inf_resue i think, the one with the phony green, cone-shaped lights- that map could be very interesting with real lights, as in soldats are much more visible in the light that say in a hall or tunnel.

Is there a reason why I've never seen lighting like this? too large file size? ugly as hell? something else? Maybe someone might like to make one.

Those were not polygons. That is impossible to achieve with a polygon; you cannot make textures transparent. They were definitely scenery; it's easy to achieve that effect with various scenery.

You've never seen them because they have only been semi-recently possible to create with Anna's brainchild, Soldat PolyWorks (popular third-party map editor). Expect to see more :)

Indeed, you can only apply lighting to your maps with PolyWorks.

Hey, there were also the primitive lights with transparency effected upon scenery as a whole... ;P
