Polyworks Shading Guide

So you think you can map,huh?


Well this is for you then



First of all the contents of this include a tutorial of how to shade maps and how to reduce the numbers of polygons in your maps. Okay?

This is the map we'll be working with:



Something to do if you want to add some bumps is to do this:




How to reduce the number of polys and make it easier to shade.


.1 First,the shape you should make the polygons triangles like these:


That will reduce the number of polys and make it easier to shade


Okay,It's shading time,first make sure you have the colors you need then think over how you want to shade it,there are 2 methods to shade your map


.1 Select a polygon with the selection tool and select the polygon,then go to the vertex paint tool click the color you want out of the pallett then click the vertex you want to pain


.2 Select the Select Verticies Tool and get the whole map selected then go to the paint verticies tool and pick the color then click on the verticie you wish to paint like this:









And heres what the map should look like in the end:

If you use this method on other maps i suggest double-triple layering the outter of the map like i did with my map CTF_Nature

If you use this method you should also try to smooth out the edges and everything,remember this is just a quick sample map i made to do this tutorial,not a real
map

Don't do it!  He's gonna sue you no matter what you do!

Great tut (for beginner mappers).  They can learn this and proceed to more advanced tuts later on :D

pretty good I guess, kind of bad placement, I dont like using such huge polygons, but you have the basics.

i just mean the overall shape should be triangles not for them to be huge because the triangles are alot easier to shade

Polyworks really needs a shading tutorial? It's easier than using MS Paint...

Way easier than using MS Paint once you know what to do. But for a new person whos never shaded before and has no idea how to, you only need 5 seconds explaining it and he's away.

lol, good tutorial, but why do you select all the vertices ya wanna shade/color? if it were me, Id just turn on Wireframe and paint the vertices unselected. though, I guess your method would be handy with overlapping polygons... whatever. nice job! ;D

Having a life span of less than six hours is bad.

This tut isn't great, because you're only teaching your shading style, not the fundementals of light and shadow, ad the various styles of shading that can be done.
