Help needed (someone is using my connection?)
« on: November 16, 2006, 02:09:48 pm »
I while ago my sister bought this thing called Netgear which creates a wireless network of your broadband so she can use her laptop where she wants in the house. But now i've noticed that something is downloading all the time and it's not me or her computer that's downloadind anything so I assume that some one is using our connection even tho i've set a password. What i would like to get is a tool that can let me see who's connected to the network, tho all my googleing after such application has turned into nothing of use. So anyone knows a application or somehow use the cmd?

Encrypt your lan with WAP or WEP.
Filter it using MACS.
etc...

I think I have a freeware app that can do this on some old CD, I'll look for it later.
Until then, get the trial of this great program which allows you to see the intruder's IP address by sniffing the packets.

Edit: after using the application i noticed another IP that's not mine ;(

Kick the crap out of your next door neighbour ;D.

Naw, seriously my best advice would be to throw away that netgear crap. I used to have a netgear router and it sucked almighty horse penis. Return that one and get a better one :P.

Or encrypt it.

Try to find out who's it is. You can try to measure this by looking at the speed to the IP (low speed = far away... I think you get it) and kill the one leeching your connection. Also, is the IP external?

well my sister wants it and she is a fucking whore when it comes to things she want. I'm just frustrated that even msn is disconnecting because of the usage of the network.

There's a thing you can do that makes all web pages loaded from stolen wireless load upside down. I can't be screwed finding it but it might be fun to do.

Only thing you can do is change your encryption to a higher level thingy and do the MAC filtering. See if you can block that persons MAC address somehow? In my netgear thing it shows you who is connected and shows their MAC address so you can get it from that.

netgear is one of the best brands of home network equipment.

Encrypt your network.  Use MAC filtering if you want even more security.  Problem solved.

It may be possible that one of the computers on your network has a virus (if you still see this traffic after encrypting and using mac fitlering).
Switch to 128bit encryption

Thanks all for your responses. I'll try to change the encryption and filtering as soon as I manage to find the config page that was shown at the beginning when i installed it.
