!Elite Party Map Pack
« on: November 27, 2006, 03:12:38 pm »
This is a collection of five maps I've made and have in rotation for the !Elite Party server. It's an experimental server of sorts trying new ideas and hoping to emphasize team gameplay, so these aren't your standard CTF style maps. All of these maps make use of the "only players collide" polygon type to allow teams to fight without ever coming into contact with each other directly. The climbwar in particular maps really make teamwork and flag tossing far more useful and valuable than standard CTF maps in my opinion.

ctf_climbwar3f -- My first complete map. The idea is that both teams are separated by a wall, and each team has its own unique method to score. Alpha must climb the inside of the structure, bringing the low blue flag up to its flag high above. Bravo must climb the outside and knock the red flag down to the floor or teammate and score low. Both teams must return/kill the EFC of course. Despite the appearance, the balance is great, and it's quiet fun to play if I say so myself. :)

ctf_time4 -- Second map using a clock face as the setting. Same deal as ctf_climbwar3f, though this time both flags are embedded in the clock face. As above, the outside team has movement speed working to its advantage while the inside team has the center ball and numbers for support (both block shots for both teams). May not be quiet as even as ctf_climbwar3f, but I still like how this turned out and plays.

ctf_homerun3 -- Inspired by Ivel's diamond shaped ctf_amp map, this map ctf_homerun3 experiments with multiple flag spawns. Bravo's flag drops from one of two points in the outfield into Alpha's diamond. All Alpha has to do is catch and slide home to score. It's Bravo's job to push the flag away from Alpha's grasp as well as taking the red flag up back to outfield and secure it on one of its flag spawn platforms until it is returned for the score.

ctf_palace2 -- The Pretty Palace is a direct attempt to make a "gay" map after a couple of people kept whining that each map and the server was "gay." Angels descend from heaven to skip along rainbow cupcakes in order to save Princess Pretty before she is captured by goblins from hell and taken back to their lair. An ice slide transports Bravo to the left castle and starting point. Death polygon structures form a barrier between the cupcake road and hell's floor. The idea was to attempt to make a Duckhunt map work on a server with all weapons enabled and where both teams can capture/return as normal when needed.

ctf_climbwar4 -- An update to the ctf_climbwar2 map I had made as an experiment to test this idea. Each side has their own half of the map which connects at the top. Flags are located on slippery ice mountains. There is a "traitor" spawn point where an enemy map infiltrate the other team's base directly, though the parachute drop down does leave him/her exposed before landing. Both teams must go up and over the map to win.

New people will often complain that the maps are not balanced when they find themselves on the losing team. They are just using the odd designs as a scapegoat, as all maps (except ctf_palace2) have seen extensive play with both teams being fully capable of winning. The bulk of the complaints are levied against ctf_homerun3, saying Alpha has it too hard. I think the ease of scoring and possession of the only large collider (the pitcher's mound) make it work, and I tend to think it's design and concept just take people off guard.

Anyway, the maps in this collection should be complete, but any updates will be available on the elitectf.com site. None of these maps use lighting, shading, or waypoints unfortunately as I'm still a beginner. :P

I joined this server and played quite a few maps and I gotta say ctf_climbwar3f was excellent.;D The clock map & ctf_climbwar4 was quite good. But the homerun level is extremely annoying and not much fun, as there are always barret campers on the top platforms and on the outsides.

But there was an even better map on that server.;D Don't know its name but it was shaped like a diamond and basically had one team on the outside and one on the inside with lots of blocks in the middle which they could climb. And the flags were situated at opposite ends (one top & one bottom.) The teams had to take the flags and race all the way back to their base, all in all while the other team try to shoot them down and race ahead to steal their flag. Sounds pretty average but it test out your aiming and movement skills quite alot as there is basically not much too hide behind.

Just hope that map is in the pack.   :)

Edit. Found it it's ampv2

Those climberwars levels are incredibly annoying..

I could see the randomness of ctf_climbwar5c being annoying for some (which it is), but the other two maps have been the real draw of the server. I really love how balanced ctf_climbwar3f is especially. The only thing I'd consider changing about it would be to make Bravo's vertical path just a bit wider so I could have a straight drop down from the top to the bottom to help Bravo score when there is just one person on the team. I hope to implement that on the next one whenever I get around to making it.

But the homerun level is extremely annoying and not much fun, as there are always barret campers on the top platforms and on the outsides.

I do want to make some changes to protect the inside team's spawn points. I will agree it is the least popular map since I think it confuses people the most about what needs to be done to win.

Glad you like the rest. I agree Ivel's ctf_ampv2 is pretty fun, though I'm surprised you don't mind the heavy spawn killing and camping here as you do the ctf_homerun3 map. :P

It's a bug while unfortunately makes it difficult to join the server at times and helps keep the server empty. :( I get it myself. For whatever reason, when trying to join a server on a nondefault map, you run the risk of getting kicked after a few seconds for having the "wrong map version," even though there is nothing wrong with it. I'm really hoping the new Soldat version fixes this or at least diminishes its occurrence.

Shall I post ctf_climbwar3?

It's in the map pack. Thanks, though. :)

The homerun map is quite confusing at the beginning but once you play it for a while you realize the concept of the map is amazing, there's just something about the map that doesn't integrate it that well... :-\ And I don't know what changes would be needed.

And ampv2, when I played it was very fun especially because both teams travelled in packs and there weren't too many barrets. Maybe homerun3 needs to made bigger so snipers don't have a view of the whole map or maybe the 'concept' of the map could be remade into a different designed map. Because atm the outside team focus just mainly on killing the other team (no surpirse ;D) but the alpha team don't, they mainly focus on catching the falling flag.

Sounds like I'm making alot of fuss about nothing, but I'm just trying to help :P
