In the world of soldat, one of the most important aspects of a server is connection speed. In most cases, hosting from a home computer is not a viable option.
A server should at the very least meet the minimum system requirements of Soldat itself, minus the graphics requirements since the server doesn't utilize the video card at all, which are the following(possibly outdated, taken from the manual):
Minimum requirements:
- A PC, a keyboard, a mouse, a brain
- 333mhz processor
- 32 MB RAM
- Network card or modem
The operating system makes a large difference as well; for a server I would strongly recommend that you use a linux based system.
Remember, the better the computer the better the performance. I would recommend at least 256 megs of RAM(512+ preferred), a fairly recent class of processor; I would recommend at LEAST a 1ghz pentium or equivilant class of processor (2ghz+ preferred, especcially if you run WindowsXP).
As for the connection the server is on, I wouln't even try hosting unless you have a connection with a 1 mbit/sec UPLOAD (not download) for any larger number of players. You can use the bandwidth calculator in this forum to get a rough estimate of the required upload speed.
If you are hosting a server, I would STRONGLY recommend that you look into an actual hosting service. Myself/EnEsCe offer servers, FliesLikeABrick offers servers through U13, Fractured offers servers, and there are more.
Now that the hardware is out of the way, some tips to keep people happy and coming back:
Get some trusted admins who don't screw around and are fair.
Listen to your patrons.
Find high-quality maps.
Try to make your server as fun as possible.
