New player out to learn the basics
« on: July 28, 2006, 03:40:41 pm »
Hey there, this may not be the right place to put this but, well, I'll give it a shot.

I've recently aquired a lap-top from a friend of mine with an interesting little game on it called Soldat. Curious I decided to check this game out and have spent the last few days playing it against bots. Having enjoyed that I decided to try playing online but *GASP* there were no active servers, nor have there been any time I have tried. I was wondering what was up as the game is quite fun and I'd love to play it against other people, but, like I said, there never seems to be an servers running...Anyhelp?

There ARE alot of good servers up, you just have to know where to look. The U13 servers, Leo's Realistic, !Avarax R/S(realistic survival, its sorta like counter strike, one life per round, recoil, falling damage etc. fun and intense games.), {SEAL} and [DS] R/S, Fractured Soldat, EnEsCe's servers and the Elite CTF servers come to mind. There are a bunch of clans here, if you get into a good one you can have access to many private servers. Check out thr "Adverts" section of the forum for s'more good ones.

Btw, Welcome to Soldat. :D

Great to have new players. : )
Well, just by any chance, did you happen to press "Request servers" at the bottom of the "Join Game" tab?

I see....hmm, my prob is though, when I pull up a sever list, it comes up with no active servers....Perhaps I need to redownload the newest version? (thanks for the welcome)

and on an utterly random note, I've found I'm a mini-gun monkey of sorts, does it really lag servers as bad as folks claim? As I love the gun.

EDIT: and yes, I clciked the server list button, I'm far from foolish good sir. ^^;

What version did you download? The latest is V1.31.

And some say Mini-gun will lower your Frames Per Second; but i've only seen this on 20+ people servers. Prepare to hear alot of 'OmG wtF MiNIN00B' in some servers if you use it alot. But if it's in right hands, the damn thing's unstoppable.

It's 1.3.1. Frog, and yes, seems most likely that you need the new version.

Methink you got the servers list set to 'LAN' instead of 'INTERNET'. Might wanna check that out amigo.
There's two little green button-thingies next to the 'Request Servers' oblong button at the bottom left of the 'Join Game' window.

Theres about 250-300 servers these days, 1/3-1/2 being active at any one time.

Might also want to check the 'Filters' button at the bottom right, to make sure you can see servers that you want to, or servers that you don't want to; you can filter out empty or full servers, or certain modes and game types. Comes in handy.

Also be sure to look around the forums for little guides, tips and advice for beginner players, and also check out http://wiki.soldat.nl/Index

Yeah, man... Just make sure you don't have the filter list checked on "Realistic only". Then you ought be sure to find a shitload of crappy servers. However, real men play realistic.
I fucking miss all you cunts!

And before you use the Minigun online, know that it will be much weaker. Soldat has a very 'interesting' netcode, and while the biggest gun in the game will rip apart bots in seconds, it will barely harm people online, because only half of your hits, or even less, will register.

Also, I recommend you come to IRC while you learn the basics: if you can play with the right crowd, you'll advance much faster ;)

Yeah, the wrong crowd are all mentally unstable crackwh*res.  Best to stay away from them.

Some advice is to try to get into decent private servers to avoid the previously stated type of people.

Thanks for all the help and advice folks, ^^ I had needed to DL a newer version of the game. Given that it's almost bed time for me (work in 7 hours) I'm gonna let you go and pick up on this tommorow. Again, THANKS! :D

Well I think you're question has been answered but I'll just say leave the 'Hide empty and full servers' in the filter checked, it saves alot of time scrolling, and seeing as you're new to the game I would advise going on some training/manouveur (however it is spelt  :P) servers so that you know how to do all the jumps and can move around maps with greater ease.

Welcome to soldat  ;D
