Linux
« on: February 17, 2007, 12:36:23 am »
I've seen a few different versions of Linux, and some have really nice features that Windows and MacOS don't have.  However, I know very little about what distributions are best in what areas, what's good and bad about them, and so on.  I did try Ubuntu and didn't really like it.  What versions of Linux have you used and why do you like or dislike it?

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.

Maybe you didn't like the Desktop Environent (GNOME), you should try KDE ;)

On my comps I use the flavours of Ubuntu except the original. Kubuntu (KDE), Xubuntu (XFCE), Elbuntu (E17).  ---I don't like GNOME myself

Download puppylinux.

The best distribution to taste linux. I think it's 65 mb.

You can install it in a usb, cdr multisesion, dvd multisesion, in the hard disk(ntfs(XP) or fat32).

1) xp can run on fat32, not just ntfs
2) you would not want to install Linux to a ntfs or fat32 partition, the default Linux file systems, ext2 and ext3 are much better, have more features and aren't a pain in the ass when it comes to reliability.
There are other worlds than these

all of the distributions look exactly the same and can be customized identically.  They all use the same software for the interface.

If you don't like Ubuntu, odds are that you're not going to find any Linux that rubs you the right way.  What didn't you like about it?

Well, Ubuntu was pretty generic...it was a dull brown, and all the windows opened how you'd expect, and for whatever reason, I couldn't access the internet or hard drive (this was a live CD, but I've seen other versions on live CD with those features).

OTOH, I saw another build (I don't recall the name) that was pretty sleek.  You could have 4 different desktops (switched by rotating them around, like a cube) and the windows had all kinds of cool effects for minimizing, enlarging, moving, etc.  The windows could even "stick" to the edges: you'd drag and it would deform slightly, then more, then it would separated and kind of bounce a little.  It used a browser called IceWeasel, IIRC (probably just the name for the Linux version of Firefox).  I guess, looking at the other ones, Ubuntu just seems kind of plain.

ubuntu does all of that stuff more easily than any other distribution, it just isn't enabled by default.  No distribution has that stuff set up by default, especially on a live CD.

I have had all of that running on my laptops with no problem, you just can't do it on a live cd and you need to set it up after you install.

edit:  the "cool stuff" is called "Beryl" and it is readily available for Ubuntu.  I think it is easier to set it up on Ubuntu than any other distribution.  It only took me about 10 minutes.

I've only used Ubuntu. It was easy enough to install. The default theme isn't that great, but you can mess around with it a lot. Also, it's Debian-based, which means it's easy to install new software. (packages with binaries are easily available)
I haven't tried KDE, but Gnome is fine. I'm thinking of installing FreeBSD on something and using KDE.

1) For hardisk > 25gb ntfs it's faster than fat32. Perhaps he have ntfs.
2)I'm sure you are right but he only wants to test linux, isn't it?

No need to partition.

Linux cannot be installed to ntfs or fat32.  You must use a linux filesystem to install linux

Does that require special hardware or just a certain type of reformating?

Puppy linux can.
In fat32 it creates a single file and puppy linux install there.
Creating a file system inside that file.
But when you boot from xp. Xp only see a file.

And in ntfs you must download a zip file. Decompress it in ntfs partition from xp. And when you intall puppy from usb or cd, puppy installs there.
