bouncy annoying polygon
« on: February 27, 2007, 12:01:43 am »
I have a few problems on my map...
1.  Sometimes a polygon is bouncy...why
2.  Does cluttering polygons (for making extra-curved surfaces) make it more glitch (dithering/bouncy (ie, when you're unable to fire LAW))
3.  How come I most areas of concave curves i can't slide and jump off them (I get stuck)
4.  How come certain vertical polygons completely stop a fall when sliding against it (as opposed to just let me continue to slide)

I'm working on a rather good TW map - building up its main features first - and i have too many probelms :/
I'd need someone who can debug a map and make it glitch-free.  I especially hate the fact that you can always barret-shoot through bullet-colliding walls - it takes away the whole purposes of these walls.
Also, is it OK for me to use gfx from scenery meant for other maps?  Like there are some good sceneries that were made for specific maps (many tw_cold mornings, rir-..., and others) - Also, if i were to release a map, should I rename them to either neutral names or my map-name or simply leave the original name of the scenery?

Sry bout having so many questions - I can't seem to figure them out  :/
Again, I'd need someone to help me rid my map of annoying polygon-glitches (and texturing it).  Anyone interested in seeing this cool map?
Can't think of anything original to put here...

I think polygons are bouncy when either:
1. they are really thin or
2. they are small and overlapping.

to make it less bouncy with the concave thing i would make them overlap a bit, I think that when it is bouncing it is hitting the corner of the nxt poly.

vertical polygons are just weerd.

I dunno about those scenery stuffs...

AND there is my 50c.

Polyworks' compile can get rid of bouncy poly.

Hmm, i turned all vertical walls into ice so that you slip better on them, i decreased the number of sides to "circles" lessening visual quality but making it better to walk on, i overlapped polygons (doesn't look TOO pretty but not a big deal) - these things seem to have enhanced playability on them...  i'll see what other issues i can come up with hehehe

chakapoko maker answered 1. For 2, yes, pasting a polygon over itself a lot of times (select a polygon and hold [CTRL] + E in PolyWorks) messes up the collision system and makes the polygon bouncy. 3 & 4 are just the collision programming; it looks like you've already resolved your problem with them (make the polygons Icy-type) :)

Sometimes you need to make them overlapping...

For example here.  Going up the ramp would make you bump back and that vertical wall would bounce out backwards too.  This fixed it when I dragged them down like so.
Overlapping polys doesn't look bad either, as long as you fix both polys involved and then restretch them so they're the same and shade them the same too.

Oh, and don't chance scenery names, it's annoying to have to download multiple copies of the same thing.
Use the orig. names.

Just to be safe even further, for example I would take the ground vertices for that bottom-right intersection and move them into the selected polygon; the best way is to be completely submerged, not just borderline, for all the lines (same with the ground connecting into the selected wall; I would move its points to the left as well).
