Zip
« on: June 29, 2006, 10:56:06 pm »
I've been using 7-Zip to compress my interfaces and mods, and I've recieved a few complaints on my .zip acting strangely. Quite possibly it's because I use the BZip2 compression format to create a .zip, when I should use deflation. Please test the following files and fill out this short form so I know what format works best.

testbzip2.zip – compressed with 7-Zip, BZip2 format, ultra compression
Were you able to unpack it? Regardless of answer, what program did you use?
testdeflate.zip – compressed with 7-Zip, deflate format, ultra compression
Were you able to unpack it? Regardless of answer, what program did you use?
testwinzip.zip – compressed with WinZip, default (I believe it's deflation)
Were you able to unpack it? Regardless of answer, what program did you use?

Alright, here is one with a .wav in it.

wavbzip2.zip – compressed with 7-Zip, BZip2 format, ultra compression
Were you able to unpack it? Regardless of answer, what program did you use?

I used winrar. Unzipped all 3 at the same time into separate folders. All worked.

Maybe you should re-try the test but with a few different types of files in the same zip

almost nobody uses 7-zip, it'd be best to stick with something like winzip or rar

I'll try different files. Someone said .wav files don't unpack properly with BZip2.

7-zip however has the best compression I have ever seen.

You're absolutely right. But Uharc's formats are rather ... unknown to most programs, and the only thing really useful I can see about it is creating self-extracting archives.

I could say the same thing about 7-Zip and any other decompression/compression utility...

Anyway, on the wave file one, used the same two as last time (7-Zip and WinRAR), and, as long as it wasn't supposed to play anything, it worked fine.
If it was, we have a problem.

It's a blank .wav file. Thanks for all your efforts.
