How to get started?
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:30:53 am »
Would anyone know any tutorials on getting started in map making for Soldat? I found the game throught a local LAN center, and I've been an addict since, and I love map making for any game. I'm coming over from UT mapping so I'd love some tips for Soldat.

Thanks in advance!

Mess around with as many features as you can, and take a look at your map editor's manual. Study the default maps. Ask here about any other tips or concerns; we're always around :)

They covered it pretty well.
A few tips:
1. Layout is the main focus. If the layout is good then the game will be good.
2. Looks are next. Shading, texture stretching, scenery, background color. Its all important.
3. Playtest your map. Go through the whole map and look for spots where there is little scenery, have a bit of fun. Fix ugly spots/buggy spots.
4. Waypoint. There are tutuorials in the bots section.
5. Play your map against 10 bots. Most fun part about making a map.

Yuck. If the map is something you want showcased you can go to TMS, but the forum uploader works too.

For head starters, study the default maps and learn how they are created.  For example, learn the shading technique and how they used the scenery and etc.  Later, if you wish to be a really good mapmaker, then review the maps created by the "great" mapmakers, like Boxo, Demonic, Horve, The Geologist, and X-Tender.  But I suggest you start out smaller first.  Good luck.
