I fail at Ubuntu.

Alright, I got Ubuntu, burned it to the disk, booted, Then I go into the connections menus to try to connect to the internet via my wireless connection- Nada. I worked at it for hours, changed my router configuration, got zip. Can anyone help?

Get a different wireless adapter that you know will work.

It sees the adapter fine, I just can't get it to see the network.

Linux is notoriously bad for Wireless connections not working. Only a select few wireless cards work right now and even getting them to work is difficult. I did the exact same thing you did. I'm being totally honest with you. Your only chance is to do some research and maybe come up with a wireless card or adapter that's known to work in Linux, but your chances of getting it to work even then are iffy at best.

this is all not really true any more.  I've seen very, very few cards that don't work in Ubuntu.  Like he said, his card is recognized fine


mytz, do 'iwconfig' and 'ifconfig -a' and paste the output here.  I'll give you further suggestions after I see what that says

I wasn't able to remember Iwconfig, I'll get that the next time, but I got Ifconfig. I'll trust you and believe that there is nothing in it that could be used maliciously.

I didn't say anything because I'm still waiting for 'iwconfig'

Once I have the output of that, I can continue to give you commands until we get this working.

we can very easily get your wireless working . What is your wireless network name an what is your WEP key?

I still haven't gotten a PM, but do these commands, in order

sudo ifconfig eth1 down
sudo iwconfig eth1 YOUR_NETWORK_NAME key YOUR_WEP_KEY
sudo ifup eth1
please save the output of all 3 of those commands and show me, so I can see what happened



if that works then there's just one more step to make it automatic every time you use the computer.  If not, then we've got a bit more.  If it doesn't work, I need to see your ssid and WEP key to make sure that they won't have any problems on the command line

Before I go, I want to ask you, my network uses a key with WPA encription. Is this still the WEP key?

ack no.  I've  never used WPA on Linux and I cannot offer you any help in getting that working.

I can tell you, however, that your wireless is working 100% fine on Ubuntu

Google.  I know that WPA works on Linux, I've just never done it.

Well, there are enough Ubuntu forums around stuffed with experienced users online all day long. That helped me too in some cases. Ofcourse, it's better to have personal contact with the "Ubuntu-people" :P.
