Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix
« on: July 13, 2007, 10:00:28 pm »
Ready? At 6:40 PM, Eastern time, I watched the fifth movie of the Harry Potter series.

Disclaimer:
A movie is a movie, not a book. I have not read the Order of the Phoenix because I quit the series at book 3. I'll try to lend some understanding that not all of the book can be squeezed into two hours.

This is your spoiler alert.

The Harry Potter series has wreaked havoc on the world. With the novel being an international phenomenon, the films achieving extraordinary praise, a decent majority of the world now obsesses about our young hero. Does the fifth movie compromise to the hype?

The answer is no.

I'm not really a big fan of fantasy. Actually, I severely detest the genre. I just don't like how you can throw together random components to force a story to make sense. But it wouldn't be fair to arbitrate the movie based on my own conspicuous opinion.

We begin, as usual, in the "Muggle" world where Harry Potter is a lonely soul residing with his usual grotesque and evil family. Dudley and his friends decide to pick on Potter, eventually touching on the tender subject of Harry's deceased parents. Harry gets furious enough to step up to Dudley, but doesn't dare to initiate the fight. Sure, he shows some restraint here, but it gets old. Countless times Harry gets provoked to such rage that he's about to smack someone. Unfortunately, it always ends the same way in the same standoff. All you get is Harry staring someone face to face, breathing heavily, looking mad and stupid. Every single time. It destroys the emotion that is supposed to be expressed in those scenes because you as the viewer get disappointed and eventually bored with Harry Potter's consistent and predictable sequence of restraint.

This is a big deal, because these little scenes essentially cover some 10-30 pages of the novel. This causes some pretty big holes to be left in the story and hinders character development.

This movie was popular partly because, oh my gosh, Daniel Radcliffe has a big kiss scene! Yes, Harry Potter kisses Cho Chang (Katie Leung) in their first love scene. Boy did it get messed up. There was no romance bond visible. They couldn't have said more than two words with each other before the kiss. And even after that, Cho Chang played such a minimal, and utterly useless role. Harry should have kissed that blonde instead.

Speaking of that blonde (Luna Lovegood), too many characters played insignificant  and useless roles. Even Harry's partners, Ron and Hermione failed to forward any theme.

The climax went by too quickly. It was all... *Flash* *Flash* *Bang* *Flash*
Oh my goodness Sirius is dead. Voldemort has run away. Again.  The worst part is that this has been the process in every single movie. Harry and a group of friends travel to some dark corridor, where they encounter their enemy. Eventually something happens that forces Harry into a one on one battle. And then finally, out of nowhere, aide for Harry arrives.

The acting was exceptional. Emma Watson was possibly the worst, often sounding more drunk than sad. But all the other actors do a superb job of establishing unique personalities for their character. The problem is how the characters support each other. There is not much character relationships in this movie. It's essentially Harry Potter leading his own militia.

Now the movie does an extraordinary job of sticking to the plot. The special effects are also stunning. They were unbelievable and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

For this movie. Don't.

Ok... I will admit it... I liked the 3rd and 4th movie, others were just to kiddie for me. Now I like the whole concept of the stories... but damn if the story does not end with the next movie(or book... whatever book is out so far) I will go insane... constantly no closer on any subject... thats my only problem with these movies...

Yes, your review really does seem biased... I am going to see the movie tomorrow.

Rowling is definitely only planning to make seven books, which would translate into there being seven movies. It was also rumoured that in the seventh book she would do something like kill off Harry so other authors wouldn't go off and continue the story with him.

The movie was a big disappointment; they left out way too much stuff, much like every Harry Potter movie.

I think Harry Potter should be an HBO miniseries where each season is one book. *drools*

I saw this movie and it was very cool. The "b*tch" got what was coming to her. The effects were very nice. And did you know the person who plays harry potter is gay?

Um. If you are referring to him being gay because of his naked endeavor in the recent performance of Equus, I think that hardly defines him as gay. What other proof do you have? I don't remember him coming out of the closet...

Hell yeah. I'm picking my copy up at 12 A.M. at my local video game/music/ book store. They're encouraging the people to wear costumes and participate in HP trivia. Hopefully I don't have to punch too many people in the face.

From The site Thunderpantz Linked, Right next to Harry Potter's Pic.

How do we know he is a depraved homosexual? Well, he's English. Furthermore, when he lives with his dreadful Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia, he sleeps "in the closet." (I never claimed that secular imagery was anymore subtle than our own!) As Harry becomes more attuned to his satanic powers, he comes "out of the closet" and befriends Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), an old biker "bear" of lascivious intentions

Off-Topic: Bwhahahahaa, and you believe that crap? omgawd....lawl u gotta be joking? i know u are...

On-Topic: Well i readed all 5 books so far, and i luved them all, soon i go with my sister, sister's friend, and sister's girlfriend to Order of The Phoenix, i dont know what to think about the movie yet until i seen it, about the books, yeah they are always better then a movie, the problem with the movies of harry is that they are to short to be good enough to compete with its book, but...if the movies would be longer (like 5 hours each) they would definatly suck...cus then its just tooo looonngggg.....

The End.

Harry is not the best book you should read Bobby Pendragon

http://www.thependragonadventure.com

it's so good (10 books 8 out know) but the action is really good in the 3 first book the 4th one is even better and for the 5, 6, 7, 8  You will be like "how does the author can do so much good book after having righting 4 before (they are better then the 3 first)

I don't know. Maybe writing practice. Maybe to kill some time. Personally, I don't think it's too biased. I disliked the Harry Potter series before I watched the movie - but I was determined to give it a fair chance.
