Polygon selection tool does not work...
« on: October 13, 2007, 11:48:55 pm »
Hi, I am making this post for a buddy of mine.  He is a big mapper and is very mad that he can not map anymore because of a problem with polyworks.  I am not sure of all the details but he told me that part of his problem is that the polygon selection tool does not work.  He says he has tried to reinstall, etc, but nothing seems to work.  I want to get him back into mapping and am trying to do him a favor by making this post for him.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

What does he mean by "does not work"? Be as specific as possible. Has it ever worked before?

But I have been having this annoying as feck lameness.

I am sure mapping would help me stay active in soldat, I am really not into it much anymore. That is threatening whether or not I want to keep my server, so if I get this answered there will be no problem.

(quote from soldatforums)

Whenever I use the shading, depth, or vertice selection tool I get a lame trail of black squares.

Please help?

/edit:

I've tried deleting the folder then reinstalling, re installing, replacing vcolor.cur, getting a different skin, replacing the .cur with an alternate functioning one, but nothing works. Ugh, annoying, 2 weeks without PW.

That is his exact problem...

Ah, thanks. But you ignored my last question, so I'll assume his last "2 weeks without PW" comment hints at its only recently malfunctioning, and that it worked as it should in the past (otherwise I would recommend a graphics card online update). With that in mind, a virus or lag from too many background processes are the only causes that I can think of...

Ask him before it stopped working for him, what on his computer has changed.

It looks like he is either in need of updating his graphic card drivers or needs to adjust his screen quality settings under properties.

I think it is a problem with Windows Vista.  He upgraded from Windows 95.

That's most likely the problem.  Windows Vista is sort of incompatible with PolyWorks for now.  Same story for Soldat.  Unless he restores his system back to Windows 95 or to another operating system, he can't fix this problem.

Also upgrading from a 12 year old computer to a computer that literally kills RAM and hard-drive is a bad idea.  I highly reconmend he switches to XP or something.  Vista just isn't good, unless Microsoft releases some service packs to fix its problems.

He originally refused to go to XP because he didn't think he could get in anywhere.  But I convinced him to just go on ebay and now he has told me that he is going to get it.
