Game Poll
« on: October 11, 2007, 03:29:00 pm »
I am doing this for a little research, and since the lounge has the most people who play video games I can think of, here goes.
Would you rather play a MMO/RPG that has one of the following skill setups:
A )Classes, you pick your class, you get (X) skill at (X) level. You have no choice
B )Skill pick. You pick every single skill you get. You want heal and critical, you get heal and critical. You get "skill points" at each level to get new skills/level up existing skills. Skills have a level limit. Skills are cost less skill points if you have the lower level skill version.
C )A mixture. You pick fighter, you pick either critical or enhanced damage. You are a mage, you pick ice or fire.

Do not associate these with any other games, just which would you rather play.

I'd say C for this one.

I say Skills.

What I don't like about classes is once you choose, you can't revert to another class.

Hybrid just makes everything more complicated.

Oh yeah that's what I was gonna say. Were gonna assume that for the skills choice you have quite a few respecs you get throughout the game. You get a few, not many, for the hybrid.

Guildwars was a good example of how C is good if it is used correctly.

I liked how you could use more strategy utilizing the skill points in your specific profession. For example, if you are an archer person you can set your skills to say accuracy rather then spells or something, and you use equipment set for your skills that you have.

Hybrid/A gives an mmo much more diversity, not just 2 warriors, 2 warriors that use 2 different strategies.

Algorithms make or break the game everywhere strategy is involved.

The more complex and well planned the better. I vote C

Best way to do skills.. I have to say Ultima Online got it right... Tons of skills to choose from  each skill is capped at 100 you have a max of 700 cap on all skills. Mix and match what skills you want, made for some really interesting pvp characters. Like my favorite a nox dexxer: All the warrior skills with a little bit of magery so you can poison your target which prevents them from healing themselves as you hack away at them with your weapon... lethal type of character. So yeah I chose B :P

C: TES: Oblivion, there are basically 3 generic classes (fighter, mage, thief). And 21 skills to choose from (7 fighter, theif, and mage skills) but you can mix and match them to create a totally unique character. My evil as hell theify/assassin dude sneaks around, coating his weapons in poisons, and putting arrows into people backs, but when an enemy is too tough (20 ft monsters with big ass cleavers) then I conjure up a demon or undead to help me out. Obviously a spellcaster would be better at casting spells, or a fighter for wielding big hammers, but it doesnt mean any other class is prohibited.
