My first map - Girder Hell
« on: November 20, 2007, 03:52:11 am »
I love this game, it's such a nice break from the wallet busting PC games I'm used to buying, this is just clean fun.

I'm on vacation this week so I spent the last 3 hours playing around with the map editor and came up with this 'abandoned building under construction girder framework map' if that makes any sense. It looks like a big erector set. Not the usual tunnels and cubby holes found in other maps. No special wavs or textures, just stock.

I'm used to mapping in Radiant for COD maps, this map editor is interesting. I'm still figuring stuff out, but this map is DM only, it plays well with a few mods I tried it with and against bots. If I can make it CTF it might be interesting.

The building is 8 stories high? with embankments building up to it on either side. It has a basement which id deadly, but you can't fly in through any part of the sides, only where the pipes are or in through the top.

I'll keep working on it, some stuff is out of place, but hey, it's a beta, and it's my first map. Try it out, leave me a comment or two.

Thanks,

CV

Wow... Its big ::) Its a good first... Im not a good mapper, but i think yhe texture could use stretching to make it look more realistic... I also like how it goes underground like that... Its a nice first... Do ypu know how to edit the color of the backround? It looks fine like that, but im just wondering (those are default colors lol)?

Downloading... Nice first...

P.S.
There are ALOT of clouds lol ;)

I just played it... Its Ok in game, but a little messy... You should cover up the edges of the beams with vegetation because of their abrupt ends, which mke it look messy... Also, its a little hard to tell where you can stand and where you cant with all of the beams... Oh, and in game, the textures (and clouds) are OkĀ  ;D

WEEEWOOOWEEEWOOOOWEEEWOOOWEEEWOOO!!!! ALERALERTALERTALERT!!!!!

Big problem!!! Theres a poly bug (not THAT big lol). A the top corners of the map, while jeting, the player can get throught the polys on the wall like a knife to hot butter. It would be better if those polys were thickerĀ  ;)

Big thanks for the comments. I wasn't sure how big it could get, but I'm a big fan of the HighFall Map from Soldier of Fortune II game, if you've never played it, don't worry, but that was a fun map so every map I like to create has to have some height to it.

I'm getting used to the editor, so yes I just figured out how to change the background colors.

I got a little icon happy withe clouds so I'm going to dump most of them and I'll make a list of the other things that you mentioned, the girders overlapping, etc. Maybe I'll come up with some end caps to put over them.

I'll work on it a little tonight and over the next few days to see if I can spruce it up a little.

thanks,

cv

Ok :) I think i might become a bug/glitch finder for maps and stuff... It would get me alot of maps
with all of the downloads, and it would be fun to play on a variety of newer maps and give people suggestions on how to fix them... Less criticism to (if the map is better than it was to start with)  ;D

Oh, and im glad ur gettin' used to the editor ;)

Wow, nice little map. You seem to obviously have potential prior experience to forums and editors which seems to make you nothing new to this. Nice to see a new and already somewhat experienced face around ;). This looks pretty nice and unconventional. I suppose I'll download it for a try. Yeah, the map as a whole looks too grey. Also, as I'm sure you'll find out, or have found out, the map editors can color polygon vertices which help map asthetics out a lot.

So yeah, my only comments for now are: I suggest you color the ground polygons outside the structure something more than the grey; maybe a bit of dirtyness outside of this half-done structure. Dirt, mud etc. This map almost looks like a level made for a 2D Mario platformer type game :D.

Well put, Black Sheep ;D

Changes You could make:
What you need to do is make ALL of the beams colliding, that way its more of an opstical course *and less comfoosing ;) *

Some of the polys could be thicker (i can fall through ALOT of them)

You should also add Thicker polys on all sides of the beams (you had it on top, but it would be better with polys on all sides so you couldnty get in front of the beams).

Maybe you could add some colliders? What a collider does is make it so a player can walk through, but bullets, nades, etc. cant. This is used on bins, barrels, boxes, crates, etc. To get to it, use the tool uĀ  use to make spawn points, RIGHT click, and select "Colider". Click where you want the collider(s) to be placed.

thats all i got for now :)

EDIT: Im remaking this map (at the same tim u r lol), just so i can hav a newer version while i wait lol ;D

P.S. To make the whole beams collide without seeing any polys, go to the pallette and set "opacity" to 0 while using poly tool ;)

cool, good info here, thanks for the pointers.

a little info about me, i work in a software test lab and every day after 5pm we game, we've played so many games, CS, UT, COD, SOF, BF2, Nexiux, Padman and now Soldat, the more violent and frivolous killing the better. One thing we like to do is go through as many different maps as possible, we like variety. If I'm really into the game then I'll grab a map editor and start cranking out my own maps. Obviously I like Soldat, so I'll crank out a few maps.

I'm stuffing my face with turkey today but i'll be back at this map on Sunday, maybe post a new one Sunday night with all the changes that you guys suggested.

big thx.
