One more advice, lower your mouse sensitivity. It'll make your aim better... just takes some time to get used to it.

Also as someone said, don't stick to one weapon. Instead, try mp5/spas and ruger/minimi/ak. That way you'll be better with both long and short range weapons.

I think sticking with M79 or Barrett could be the worst thing anyone could do, I tried to perfect them, well I wish I used them so much less and used auto's instead, I'd be so much better. I'm pretty good with auto's, but I could be even better if I used nub 1 shots less. It was a hard weapon to try to drop.

I think doing a 3vs1 against bots helps you in clan wars too, if they are on impossible, then you try to cap atleast once fighting them, it's all good, it'll help you kill your MULTIPLE enemies at the same time.

Also, work on all weapons instead. Go from HK --> AK --> Steyr Aug --> Spas --> DEagles --> Ruger --> Minimi --> M79 --> Barrett --> HK and the process goes over again, I do something like that, I train with one, then I go to the next weapon. It's a help, if your fighting someone and they use the same weapon, you can switch to the guns weakness, as long as you can use all weapons, then your all set.

Will, I already said the mouse sensitivity somewhere before, but thanks anyways. This guy is getting all the help no one offered me when I first started :P

You should play again, I "quit" soldat for maybe 2 weeks, a friend came back to soldat and I started playing again, and then I got server admin so I stayed.

Actually, I think you play on gathers even if your still new right now. It will help you lots.

Get mIRC, then go to #sna.gather to train. You'll be great in maybe 2 months. Use auto's or else you'll be called nub unless your good with other guns.

Ok, dont let these people fool you, all though this may be a personal experience, i started with an m79/auto mix... mainly m79 because it was 1 hit kill, take a couple days max with it and you will be very good with it, its not very difficult as most people portray it to be, hence why its overused by beginners. Although i dont really advise the weapon, as they say, it can be addicting.

Quote
Otherwise, you're right in that the steyr can be pretty ineffective.
The steyr is like any other weapon, i use this weapon the most now, and i can usually kill someone within half a clip, it used to take me a 3rd to a full clip to be able to kill someone for the longest time. It takes time to actually be able to match up with someone using 1-2-3 hit weapons with an auto.

I recently started using deagles, finally, but that is a great all-round weapon, it can be used to match with the better short range weapons, if used right. It can also be used for mid range for its most effectiveness.

Unless your very agile, the knife is your best bet as a secondary, really depends on the primary though, but if your autoing, deagling or rugering, the knife is your best friend in a tight situation. Saw is clumbsy :P

The minimi is also a good weapon, maybe you should try it out, its got a huge clip and its got power, better moving accuracy than most auto's and range. But the ak is also a nice weapon as well but i usually pick the minimi over the ak, but thats just my preference.

And if you want to become better at the barrett, try the snipe&slice public server, i became pretty good with the barrett through using that server regularly.

*note: this is just my point of view on these weapons, maybe i have a different style than most people here, who knows, but it works, so i wont argue ;)

lol Id say...deagles, at close and when you fire horizontally, its one of the easiest weapon to use. Once you get the taste of it, even if you do find it hard to do things other than point blank shots, you will not let it go. And it will be most useful later as one of the most powerful weapon in this game.

I say pick a gun you like and use it. It doesnt matter what ever someone says like "m79 noob" "barretard" "rugertard" Ignore them because it's the user of the weapon not the weapon itself + If you pwn people, they will whine so beware :D

I have been playing a little bit. There was an ELite CTF server I think, and I just got ranked 2nd in points in one of the games, using mix of ruger/AK (mainly AK). I was getting a lot of kills, like 10 or 15, on one of the maps with my Ruger. It still takes me three shots to put someone down though (unless they're already injured). M79 I have only used when I could not get a kill with other weapon, IE when I needed the splash damage. As far as CTF style...I have run the flag back maybe five to seven times, but mostly I have been running along and killing when everyone rushes my flagcarrier OR I have been sitting back at base with the ruger. It's fun as anything.

Thats called !Elite Mod CTF, yeah, its all modded so the guns aren't the same on other servers, so in that case, I'd recommend spas, since its a 1 hit kill and its 12 bullets I think, and you can reload one at a time if you need to shoot while reloading.

Also, Law or Knife best for secondary. Law shoots 3 shots, while Knife goes at super fast speeds almost as fast as a barrett shot.

I suggest Automatics. Once you've gotten the hang of them try to move to single shots like D. Eagles. If you really enjoy the thrill of single shots, go for the more advanced Ruger77 or even Barrett. That is if you don't get turned off by practicing with Automatics.
Miss your shots, miss your chance.

I wouldn't advise learning to lean on the one-hit-killers so early on, but that's just me. :P I would probably start with the AK, since it's a very middle-of-the-road sort of weapon, kind of the prototypical automatic, and certainly powerful in its own right. If you're less into automatics, try out the Eagles, I'd say. Figure out your style of play, pick a weapon that suits it, and refine. Of course, to be really good, you'll want to eventually learn to use just about every weapon -- how, when and where.

Secondary weapons in particular are just as much of a topical thing as a preference thing, but the Socom is the easiest to use and most effective at range. Throwing the knife takes a certain knack and now requires a fairly decent charge time to make a quick kill out of it. If you're into actual melee combat, the chainsaw is a much better choice than the combat knife (although actually stabbing someone with the knife is immensely satisfying). As for the LAW, well, it's good for one quick powerful shot, but for the reload time on the thing, you're better off dropping it and grabbing a dropped primary... which, in itself, isn't a half bad tactic.

I've done lots and lots of practicing against bots because I was stuck on dialup for ages, and it certainly didn't do my aim any harm (and gives me a slight edge in that zombie server, methinks.)

After a little while of playing, I can refine my favorites a little bit. I use the SPAS nearly all the time. My aim still isn't perfect, especially at range, but on a good day I can get hits all the way to three quarters of the screen. Second and third would probably be AK and Minimi. I've been practicing with all weapons though.
I played a deathmatch today and got about half my kills with the LAW. I love this thing. I was in Arena, and I could find places to run to and reload. Stop, drop, and frag -- awesome. And of course, since I play on !Elite Mod a lot, my two fave weapons are even more boosted.
I haven't played much with barrett, since the horrific recycle rate would destroy me, but I tried it today. Boom boom boom, three headshots just like that. I may have to give this one a second chance.

Also, I have my mouse sensitivity on 80% -- is this optimum? When I rugered I used 70%.

If you are so good with LAW go play Leo's R/S/A, you will win here.
