new comp, is it strong enough?
« on: February 04, 2008, 09:08:32 pm »
hoi,
just got a new comp and was wondering if it can keep up with most of the new (more or less) games such as crysis, unreal tournament 3 and whatever.

it's basically this:

with a GeForce 8500 GT card.. pretty lame gfx card i suppose.

i just want to know what to expect, 'cause i just can't wait to play half life 2 smoothly.

my previous computer was a pentium 4 2.4ghz 128 ram with a radeon 9800 ;D
naturally i'd expect a whole different gaming experience, but then again, i wonder how much better would that be?

thanks.

# ntel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz (3.2 GHz for Vista), Intel Core 2.0 GHz (2.2 GHz for Vista), AMD Athlon 2800+ (3200+ for Vista) or better
# 1GB (1.5GB on Windows Vista)
# NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (Radeon X800 Pro for Vista) or better
# 256MB VRAM or better
# 12GB free hard drive space
# DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
# DirectX 9.0c or 10

Depending on ram you can run Crysis. HL2 is 4 years old. You can run it.

As long as you don't run Vista on it, it'll be good enough.  Vista will consume about half of your processor and really ruin your gaming experience.  Video-card seems stable enough to handle intense gaming.  RAM is important though, how much is installed?

2ghz RAM i believe..

?

well i know it's supposed to run games like crysis, the question is will i be able to enjoy playing games like crysis? or will it have really low FPS or something?

sorry to sound retarded but the last time i was into hardware is when radeon 9800 pro was brand new, hence why i'm so scared i wouldn't be able to enjoy even HL2 even tho it's old.

You will only enjoy crysis if you think graphics = fun.

Radical, you do know ram is the cheapest part you can buy for a computer... Right?

Actually, Tons of things are cheaper. Like USB hubs. You do Know That I don't pour my whole life into gaming... Right?

I spend almost everything I earn on my drumming gear, so I obviously don't have much left over for computer upgrades. All I need is something that does homework, has access to the internet and msn, blasts music, and makes it, and maybe plays soldat for fun. It's not a huge priority for me, and since my harddrive isn't packed wall-to-wall with crap, I don't need the extra performance either.

Half Life 2 can fine run on my PC... and my PC consists entirely of hardware from 2001. You should have no problems with it what so ever.

The developers of Crysis are total idiots... Yes lets make a game with prototype specs for future PC's so that nobody can even run it in medium settings!!!

Anyway UT3 should run fine... it isn't as pretentious as Crysis and the Unreal engine has never been too taxing on hardware.

The 8500GT isn't lame at all, and it's not worth getting anything more advanced than it until people are using DX12, it'll probably last you a while.

I'd give up graphics for game play any day. unfortunately, as games go up in graphics these days, they same cannot always be said about quality and play value.

Agreed. These days it all about the destruction, the graphics, about how much money you have to pay to get a computer that can run it in low gfx setting. Soldat's done so well because any computer made since 1998 can play it.

Damn, I've been wanting oblivion for months, and I'm about a half gig short of ram... Time to upgrade.
