saving (macromedia)flash stuff
« on: February 20, 2008, 12:52:36 am »
Basically, I want to Know if it is possible to save flash (like youtube videos, games) onto my computer.

If it is possible, how is it?

I don't care if I have to get a program or if it is just a command, however you save them (if you do) I would like to know.

yes it is.

While you're looking at the webpage that has the game you want, view the source code of the page.  Find the URL mentioned in the source that ends in .swf.  you want to save that file to your computer via your favorite means.

sometimes they're not named .swf because they're dynamically named/loaded.  this can be trickier and in this case you need to look for the embedded object or frame that looks like it contains the game.

For youtube videos you need to get the flv file.  You might be able to find this mentioned in the source, but there are applications out there designed specifically to download youtube videos for you.

edit: btw it isn't macromedia anymore, adobe bought flash

edit2: http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php here is a firefox plugin so that you can just click a button in your browser to download the video.

edit3: http://keepvid.com/ here's a website that does the same thing, you just give it the address of the youtube video you want.  you can play the .flv file with VLC media player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Then again a lot of people don't want their flash stuff taken. You will come across some that only work on a specific domin/website

Or you could also get UnPlug... it's a Firefox add-on. It lets you download all digital media to your harddrive. It locates it in the source code for you and provides you with the save button. As long as you don't try to redistribute the free stuff (like some of those great flash games) for profit, this is legal.
