Puppy Linux
« on: February 19, 2008, 04:55:20 pm »
Having been a Ubuntu (still not very skilled with it) user for some time now, I decided to look around at different distros just as a learning experience and to get an idea of what other distros are like.  However, while there are many frustrating things I couldn't figure out with Ubuntu, Puppy Linux has completely overwhelmed me.  Before I go to their official forum, I'm coming here to ask if anyone has any first hand experience with Puppy Linux specifically as I'd love to learn more about this OS that is currently an enigma to me.  I'd prefer to be able to talk to someone via instant messenger (Yahoo, or MSN).

I'm still looking through the documents that came default, but it's much easier as far as I'm concerned to simply ask the questions you'd like to know to a real person.  While I have no "problems", there are things I'd like to know and be able to do, but I have not nearly enough experience to even do even the simplest tasks.  So anyone with any Puppy Linux experience, speak up, else I'm off the their forum in search of help.

Forget about it. If you want a less frustrating Linux distro, go for PcLinuxOS.

Forget about it?  That's not a good way to overcome something and learn it.  I like everything I've seen myself about Puppy Linux, and I've seen other examples of it's potential from various places and I'm determined to stick with Puppy Linux.

red hat? you could probably find a huge list of distros just about anywhere.

And if you don't like it, livecds make wonderful coasters.

Yeah, I know of Red Hat.  Puppy Linux is the one I currently have my heart set on though because not only does it have great potential and is great for normal everyday use just like Ubuntu is, it works well on older PC's (not a problem for my current PC, but I have old one's I'd like to tinker with).  The only problem I've ever had with any Linux OS is not compatability, I can easily get past/by that.  It's the learning curve (especially Puppy Linux).

I'm really sorry, truly I am, but if its complicated try something a little less complicated and move your way up. Does that help? PcLinuxOS is like Windows on the outside, but internally its Linux.

Have you even tried Puppy Linux?  It's not a matter of "oh my god how do I reboot, open programs, and change my wallpaper", it's a matter of things such as how to do things to customize the operating system to your liking.  I can use the OS just fine, it's the fine-tuning and eye-candy with a hint of changing the way some things work that I'm learning how to do.  They'd be just as difficult, or nearly as difficult to do on anyother Linux OS if you're going in with little to no technical Linux experience.

These things are not "ridiculously" hard to learn (nothing I'm wanting to do), it's just that I need starting points, someone to give me a little bit of hands-on teaching, and quite simply the ability to learn and pick things up as I go.  I'm not wanting to tackle some insane project and modify Puppy Linux to an extent that I might as well claim it as my own distro.  I'm just wanting to try new things, Ubuntu has never let me down, and it's still my favorite distro, it's just simple curiosity guv'. ;)
