DM StarMine
« on: June 08, 2007, 06:26:53 pm »
Here's my 3rd and final release until I fix the problems pointed out in my first two releases. This time, I tried out some new ideas w/ the scenery, using two large images to apply the entire background and foreground all at once. Thanks to Eagles_Arrows for pointing out the concept of polybugs to me. Hopefully this map has none. Smaller than the other two; This one was inspired by starcraft. Waypointed, plays great with 4 bots. Let me know what you think!

edit 1: Added an outer ring of blending polys and added a shadow underneath the platform. Thank you demonic.

Use some of fx_light/col/somethings to add some black to the bottom of the platforms/top of the backgrounds, so it feels like there's some depth. The huge jag-like hill near the middle disrupts the obligatory circular route for DM maps, so you could make one way under it; for added aesthetics, it might be a smart idea to make another layer of polygons around the map, with the outside colour being totally black, so it fades in with the blank scenery.

I'm gonna subscribe to LordDB's mapping train. :) This is a really good line of them.

Thanks demonic for the tips. The big "mountain" isn't really a mountain, just a hump. The map is smaller than it looks, almost 2 player arena size. I intentionally wanted the "summit" to be a bottle neck (or deathtrap) because that's where the pointflag and rambo bow spawns. And thanks everybody else for the great feedback!

Could somebody tell me how my waypointing is? Good? Horrible? All I know is that the bots will lap my maps if left unharassed.

This map seems to be a little small.  Also the background colors may affect the game-play because you may not be able to see grenades and bullets when you're in-game.  This map is allright, your other ones were better.

The 3D crystals look totally out-of-place. It's a great concept, but if you're going to attempt that, try putting them along the lines of texture-stretched vertices to try to achieve better visual effects :)
