I need a new video card.
« on: April 04, 2008, 07:39:58 am »
My current one is overheating and I want to be able to play more modern games.
My current specs:

 - Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 ~2GHZ
 - Motherboard - ASUS A8N-E 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX
 - Dual 1 Gig ram sticks
 - PSU - SeaSonic S12-600 ATX12V / EPS12V 600W
 - Current Video Card: AOpen 90.05210.607 GeForce 6600 256MB GDDR2

I'd like to get at lease something in the GeForce 8 series. My problem is that the card can't be much wider or thicker than this.

Any suggestions? Preferably I'd like links to the item on newegg.

Don't go ATi if you want it to overheat. Your better off with Nvidia, coz they just rock with any game :)
I wouldn't dare go anywhere under a 256mb video card, and if you've got some money to burn, get a 512mb or higher. How are you playing games on Linux anyway? Windows partition?
Just another soul to burn.

Games like Unreal, Wolfenstein, Doom3, Quake 4, and a few others, under linux and I'm going to either install XP Pro or Vista Ultimate on a spare hard drive to be able to play games like my old windows games, Halo, Battlefield, Myst, Splinter Cell, and maybe some new ones, idk yet.

I'm forgot to mention that I'm definitely going to go with Nvidia and won't settle for anything less than 512mb on the card.

My budget is anything $200 and under.

Yikes, this won't be easy...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150229 - This NVIDIA Geforce 8600 might just be small enough. Might.

It supports DX10, will play Crysis at Med-High settings with a decent framerate. Sure, you really won't be getting super high settings with 16x AA, 720000x640000 resolution and dynamic menstruation physics, but you'll be able to run most new games and have way more fun than I'm having with my computer.

I just looked inside my case and that will definitely fit. Unless I find something with more ram, I'll go with that. Thanks :)

Don't try an AGP version of any ATI card, you'll most likely end up with Omega drivers which do no support linux.

If you're going Radeon then Asus EAH3850 512MB is a very good card without an overwhelming cost. It can run Crysis at high graphics with an FPS rate of never less than 25. And with never, I mean when you're in the lagoon and you're spinning your mouse around. On medium, never less than 40 or even 50. Normally at least 60. Every other game I've tested runs smoothly at the highest settings.

The only downside is that the card itself is about the size of a football field. At least you can brag about that too. And the card always stays cool.

I'd recommend ATI Radeon HD3870, 240$ and very very powerful, the only problem is, it's about 24 cm long... On the other hand, It can run Company of Heroes with every maxed out including Anti Aliasing, at 1280x1024, and it gives an average FPS of 70. I was also able to play STALKER at its very maximum, and I'm trying Crysis next week, benchmarks say it can run it at very high, without AA and at 800x600 with decent fps, also it doesn't overheat or make any noise.

Honestly, I refuse to go with ATI because my motherboard is intended for geforces and ATI has bollocksty Linux drivers. Please only suggest NVidia cards.

newer ATI cards have better Linux support than nvidia, since AMD/ATI have opened up the drivers and specs for all of their new cards.  Personally, I'd choose an ATI over an NVIDIA when it comes to newer cards, simply because of that.

I would also never use an NVIDIA card on Vista (not that I would use Vista anyway), because apparently NVIDIA's drivers are responsible for a ton of bluescreens/crashes on Vista.

Ya, I thought the same thing when I built my brother's computer. There are no linux drivers for the nvidia card I bought him. I'm going to try to stay with ATI on my next computer if I can.

Buy a new computer ATI compatible ;)
