Help Installing Ubuntu
« on: April 24, 2008, 06:57:04 pm »
I've installed other Linux distros on some older computers for fun, and I recently decided to switch my regular computer (this) from Windows XP to Ubuntu 7.10. But, during the install process, it just freezes up at 82%. I'll let the picture explain:

At the time of this post it has been stuck on this for about 45 minutes.

This is my second attempt to install, and I fear that either I'm just being impatient and it's just one of those things that takes forever, or my computer is being rather lame. Help?

Nevermind. After nearly an hour it finally managed to complete the installation. I'm just dense.

If by weeks you mean hours ago then I agree with you.

Guys, the reason this stuff is so slow right now is because this version just came out today

Once it is installed switch the mirror you use to lug.mtu.edu and everything will go faster.  When it does "scanning apt repository" or whatever, it is scanning the main Ubuntu mirror.  Right now, tens of thousands of people are downloading hundreds of megabytes of packages from there as they update to the new version.

This happens to everyone during every release.

Normally that step only takes 10 seconds to complete.

Their servers are taxed from flocks of people, no matter what version.

Yes, it doesn't matter what version you're installing... they all use the same default server and today is a release date for the new version.

Why are you using 7.10 instead of the version that just came out today?
