Png is a smaller filesize and is able to use alpha transparency, so, png is much better then the standard bitmap.

Superficially, it may seem PNG is superior; PNG has bad resampling in the current version of Soldat, however, and if you're not careful with the antialiasing, the fact that Soldat adds its own AA can make details even harder to resolve than they already are.

In the end it's completely to your discretion. You should decide based on what you're looking to do and what you can do.

For the weapons themselves you should use .bmp really... there's no point using .png unless you want to make semi-transparent guns (perhaps to create the illusion that they're reflecting the sky - although I haven't yet tested this)

personally I use .png for fire and smoke for transparency purposes.

*nods at Mangy* Same here; I was really excited at the PNG support at first but I was quickly disillusioned due to, as I said, the fact that PNG support wasn't optimal. I highly recommend you do use the PNG support for the in-game effects like explosion/bullet/muzzleflash/weather/blood, though, since, well, as I see it, alpha-t bullets have become standard.
