I've been playing Soldat for over 5 years now. And the majority of that time I've spent using knife as my primary weapon.

I can tell you that knife only or snipe & slice servers are the worst possible way of practicing.  The best way to practice is in a normal public game where all weapons are available. It allows you to get used to evasive tactics against each weapon and taking people by surprise.

What you must do is get into the practice of using the throw weapon key as if it were the grenade key. The distance and arc is fairly similar (knife actually goes a bit further) And what you need to learn to do most is to quickly recover your knife from a victim (if thrown)

But using the knife is only part of the equation. The other part of the equation is movement. The very best way to knife people is to learn how to move as quickly as possible. If you charge at full speed into someone and throw a knife at them when you get close, they don't stand a chance of being able to even get a shot off most times. The only real trouble comes with m79'ers who you'll ultimately have to avoid or pray for a 'hit' error to occur when they shoot you.

For instance... in ctf_maya2, at the very beginning of the round I tend to speed ahead of the team and generally get to the far side of the bridge before anybody else is even beyond the crates on either team. They don't expect to see you so far ahead, they are expecting to meet you in the middle of the bridge.

If you've ever come across me in game then you should know how disciplined I am with the knife as well as movement.

Another thing to know is when to try to recover your knife or when to just leave it and carry on without it. When you are retrieving a knife you are very vunerable and sometimes it is better just to leave it behind and switch to primary weapon until you can get hold of another one. You need a sharp eye on looking for knives on the ground... they can easily be mistaken for Desert Eagles in some instances.

It doesn't matter how long you have played, these stupid guides won't further your skill. Learn by experience, because most of the explanations are kind of common sense.

With this guide...
You aren't looking to be a better knifer.
You look to be a better and smarter player to have the advantage over another player regardless of what weapon.

Acutally, a HUGE secret to the knife, is move the OPPOSITE way you throw. It flys faster and farther, hits harder too. Move left when you throw right. fly up when you toss down. You get alot more power and distance that way. Trust me, test it out one day.

Eh thats just an illusion you get because you are traveling away from the knife so it looks like it goes faster and further.

No actually its not. Try it. Trust me.

It really seems like an illusion. Take the flamer as a good example. Move backwards and shoot the flamer. The flames seems longer. Move forward, and it looks shorter.

It is an illusion. The flamer goes longer because you are "pulling" the flamer back. The flame hits the same spot even if you move backwards.

Same goes with knife, you moving backwards and the knife going forwards makes an illusion. If the knife really DOES throw harder, its like saying if you move backwards while your friend is running away from you your friend can run at a very fast speed.

You won't improve too much by asking people how to use a knife. You learn simply just by constantly using it. You'll eventually get the feel of it like everyone does.

Soldat is wierd like that. Take nades for example. Dont you think a head shot would hurt more than legs? If you toss opposite way you move, its an instant kill EVERY time. If you move forward, it isnt always instant kill. Most times yes, but not always. Ive been knifing for  a very long time. Works for me, every single time.

There's been a lot of debate about whether player movement affects the knife. I still say it doesn't, although I can't be 100% sure. I've tested it a few times by throwing the knife from the exact same spot while moving in various directions, and it always seems to land in about the same place.

I also tried throwing it up in the air, first when falling, and then while jetting up, and it seems to go about the same height both ways.

I learned how to knife on hexer(RPG server). I had a level 45 that was super tough to kill, so I decided that was the best place to learn the best (IMO) secondary. Just practice practice practice. Playing bots was useful too because they are retarded and you can practice your aim without getting shot at as much.

Man, this sounds like a stupid advice, but the only way to get better, is to use it, use it more and keep using it. I don't think playing on knife only servers is a good idea, because you don't get a hang of how to use it in "normal" match, and getting kills with knife is a lot easier on a server where it's the only weapon. If you want to use knife really efficiently, you'll need to learn how to adapt to different situations and when to use the knife. Basically, just play normally with knife as your secondary. Don't JUST use knife because you'll be easy target then. It's a good idea to occasionally play on knife only servers and maybe play knife duels or dm with your friends, and hone your skills that way.

It actually doesn't take that long to get fairly good with knife. I have been using it since 1.1.5 and I think I haven't really gotten any better with it in 2-3 years, though of course it took some time to get used to the new knife (hold to throw) when it was implemented.

If in real life, you toss a frag grenade at someone's feet, the shrapnel is going to explode at their entire body, not just targeting the feet. The chances of living are very slim. My art teacher got attacked that way in Vietnam and he almost died, and he is now right hand handicap.

I'm never that good with the knife, so I never use it. I envy some players who manage to make extraordinary feats throwing the knife at the most unthinkable situations and positions.
