Need Help With Ubuntu 8.04

I just put the new ubuntu release on my old computer today.
just need help with a few things...
- Cant get on the net. i got a d-link dsl 302g modem.. tried doing the thing in help - sudo pppoeconf. doesn't         really work. says it detected 2 ethernet devices but after that it says it had error connecting..
- Cant work out how to get the compiz effects. anyone know how?

General advise: Search the Ubuntu forums. The dev's there have probably already found a solution.

1) do you use a router?

2) Is you video driver configured properly?

1. Its just a modem
2. where do i get the drivers? can i use the ones on cd for windows?

How do you have multiple computers plugged into the modem without a router?  If you have a router or switched network, you shouldn't need anything like ppp config

no no no.
i only have 1 screen and 1 power cable so i completely unplug one computer to use the other.
so thet frees up the ethernet port on my modem
