So i have to switch to Linux Ubuntu
« on: July 25, 2008, 05:07:41 am »
My computer is crap. I tried to reformat my Windows XP whole day yesterday without any positive results. The installation freezed/restarted and so on. Luckly i've got Linux Ubuntu live cd.
Im using it right now to write this post. I have some thoughts and questions about it.

Is there a antivirus and/or firewall for it?

Does Photoshop PS3 works with it?

How do i change fonts?

How do i change fonts in firefox?

How do i change resolution when there is no more bigger yet the screen looks like crap?

Edit :

When i try to install it on my harddrive it stops at 5% "Creating ext file system for/in partition #1 of IDE1 master"

Might as well throw in a question too:

When I done the trial thing (without install) I can't see the menu bar stuff that is at the top. My screen res is 1440*900, how could I fix this?

If you want to fix your screen resolution then you need to get more pixels

Yes but I only use it to scan windows partitions

Does Photoshop PS3 works with it?

Downgrade if you can, CS2 works very well.

Start messing around with your settings.

I personally loved how the options in firefox were completely reorganized, and by reorganized I mean hidden from me entirely.

That sounds like your hard drive pissed out on you, but flab could very well prove me wrong.

It sounds like your hard drive may be failing.  If the windows xp install is failing *and* the Ubuntu install is failing, you very likely have a hardware problem.  Based on the fact that the only thing that can break the first steps of an XP install are hard drive issues (or others that cause the hard drive to act improperly) *and* that you're having a problem just formatting for the Ubuntu install, I would guess that your hard drive is failing.

edit: to answer some of the other questions:

- You don't need a firewall or antivirus on Linux/Ubuntu
- What fonts do you want to change?  Almost anything can be changed by the firefox preferences (about:config) or gnome font/appearance settings
- As for your resolution, the Ubuntu installer has gotten many times better at properly configuring the display settings over the past few versions.  What version of ubuntu are you trying to install, and what kind of video card do you have?

In any case, you need to resolve the [likely] hard drive issue before trying to install anything.

If you want to confirm the status of your hard drive, boot from the Ubuntu live cd, go to applications-> accessories-> terminal and run "sudo badblocks -nvs /dev/sda" and paste us the output.  It will take a very long time to run, at least a few hours

heh, the main difference between the winblows version of firefox and the Linux version is that on windows to change the settings using a gui, you go to Tools > Options. On Linux, it's Edit > Preferences.

If you want to confirm the status of your hard drive, boot from the Ubuntu live cd, go to applications-> accessories-> terminal and run "sudo badblocks -nvs /dev/sda" and paste us the output.  It will take a very long time to run, at least a few hours

Will that cause problems if the drive's partition(s) are currently mounted?

The way Linux is structured, no program that isn't running under root can do anything to the system at all. That's why it doesn't need antivirus. But if you're so inclined...a few old versions of the free AVG were made for linux.

And yeah, Linux can have firewalls. The most prominent one is called firestarter, google it or search for it in synaptic and read it's man page.
