Why is wireless so fecking slow?
« on: October 08, 2008, 07:40:58 pm »
My family and I recently moved to a new house and we got our internet transferred from our old house. The closest telephone jack from my room is about 30 metres away in the master bedroom. My mom didn't want me to run a ethernet cable all the to master bedroom because she thought that the cable would make the house look messy. So my brother gave me his old desktop wireless pci card because he hardly used his desktop anymore. I though "Humm... wireless isn't that bad, It's only like a couple of kilobits slower than running a cable." But after I finished installing the wireless card, it took like 10 minutes just to load a 3 video on youtube. So I went to my moms room and tried to load the exact same video on her computer that was using a cable. It took under 20 seconds to load. Is there a way to increase the speed to my wireless because i hate wait like a minute just for a website load.

Its half as fast as 100mb/s at its best, its also super unreliable.

Theres just about nothing you can do except try to increase the signal strength, I recommend destroying any concrete walls between you and the router.

if you've got a movable antenna, moving it just a few inches can make a dramatic difference on either the router or the computer end.

Erm that's not the problem, wireless connections are that, they may get cut in any moment and that crap, I have one but it doesn't give me any trouble.

New wireless cards are very fast, though only useful if you use a laptop. I'd suggest (a) running the ethernet cable through the wall, or (b) getting a new wireless card. You say its an old one, and they have evolved immensly since they came out.

Would the internet speed increase if I overclock my wireless card?

It's not a CPU or GPU. If it's an old card it'll suck. If it's a new card it'll suck...but you can tweak the settings and get better signal and place it in a good spot. Oh and make sure you have made it secure.

Mine wireless internet is extremely fast for some reason. It's only 54.0 Mbps, but it still runs the internet really smooth.

Is it because that I have a router attatched to the cabled internet?

meh normally it displays the connection speed if you have something like under 5Mbps than try to move your antenna closer and with a better angle..
if not..than wellcome to hell >:D

Occurs i run my internet on 24Mbps and it runs smooth ..54.0Mbps its the best normal speed for wireless(maby there are some stronger but still) plus its a half speed of a normal LAN connection(100Mbps)
and what do you mean by "router attatched to the cabled internet? "
routers are always connected to the internet cable

Drill some holes to walls, for ethernet cables ;)

Or try to move the antennas (or get better ones)
or even make ur own!

To be quite honest, wired is still superior.  However, if you've taken the precautions of making sure things aren't blocking the signal, etc. etc.  then perhaps you may need to simply buy a new wireless card.  They're fairly inexpensive and you would be greatly surprised at how much of a speed increase there is between older and newer cards.

Go into your wireless router, find the part where it specifies the wireless transmit speed.  It is most likely set to something like "fastest possible" or "auto" and should have options like 54 mbit/s 24mbit/s and about half a dozen others.

Set that to 24mbit or something lower.  Telling it to attempt that as its maximum speed allows it to become more sensitive when trying to receive data on both ends.  If you want to know more about how this works, read up on "Receive sensitivity"

Also try putting the wireless access point up higher, like on top of a filing cabinet or on top of your desk if it has a higher point than where it is.

We have been doing a lot of wireless testing for our senior design project and have found numerous ways to make wireless much more effective.

You can also buy another wireless access point and stick it in the middle of your house and set it up in 'repeater' mode.  This will have it act as a second access point repeating the network access that your current one provides.  This is a good solution for $30-$50 or so, and you don't need to have a network port for the repeater, just power.  If you're interested in this, I can suggest a few different models to pick from.
