Forum jIRC Applet
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:37:11 pm »
Mangled had a rather good idea.

Is there any simple way to implement a java IRC applet into the forums? And if not, I suppose we could just make an external one and advertise it somewhere.

For that matter, how many of you would use it if it was available?

I'm just trying to get a sense of whether this idea would work out or not.

I generally don't like what these kinds of things do to IRC channels.  While it'd be nice to get more people into IRC, I'm not crazy about this idea.

This would kill whatever IRC server it touched. Think about how many people join SF a day. Now think about how many guests there are every day. If the client auto-connected, every single member and guest would be on that server while on the main page, and would kill the server.

Nah, the quakenet irc network has many, many servers set up to handle vast amounts of connected users and messages. Having one of these autoconnecting IRC java applets wouldn't screw quakenet over in anyway, but would definitely junk up these forums.

It wouldn't hurt quakenet, but it'd make a mess of the channel.

Yeah I'd be against this. Just point them to chatzilla instead. For registered members with over a certain # of posts it would be ok to have a tab with this, but idk much more than that.

Just advertise IRC. No real need for an actual embedded IRC client. If people are interested in it, they'll join or read tutorials on how to, or whatever.

In my opinion if someone isnt smart enough to download an IRC client, they shouldnt be on IRC. I hate IRC n00bs that wonder why no-one is talking to them

I use ChatZilla... it's not an "actual" IRC client, it's an add-on for Firefox, as you can tell from the name. It gets me the channel successfully, and that's all that really matters.

Add me on PSN: Newfrag. Just make sure to tell me you're from SF. :P

Yeah, but we were all new to IRC once... People have to start somewhere.

If not a jIRC applet... then how about a live feed of the chat and information on how to join?

If someone can find me an AJAX IRC  thing (like php server side with AJAX) I'll give that a look.  I really don't want to use Java, but an AJAX setup would be pretty neat.

What about one that is an open-source project so it could theoretically be embedded directly into the forums?

I spent a few minutes googling just that, only to find that one probably doesn't exist. The only thing I found were a bunch of blog posts raving over the thing UPNPAD found. I guess there's no demand since a lot of people are fine with java applets.  :-\
