openSoldier

Hey guys, lately I've been working on a little project codenamed openSoldier. It's a 2d sidescroller shooter inspired by soldat, although it does have some different features as of right now even. I've attached 3 screenshots, remember it's still in early early stages of development.

Current Features:
  • Loads and Displays Maps(includes scenerys)
  • Has a collision detection system(only for player right now)
  • In-game zoom
  • Jetpack
  • Camera System
  • Supports transparent polygons, and each poly has attributes for each vertex color (looks bland because i did not try to make map sexy, just same template)
  • Maps can specify max and min zoom's
  • A lot of other stuff thats only half done so I didn't include it.

I want to know your guys opinion on it, I wrote up a quick website template but I thought it would be good to wait. If anyone wants to contribue the name "openSoldier" means more than a whorin game ;). I am free to suggestions, although I would prefer if we stayed on gameplay and not to graphics since they are the least exciting thing to implement.

What's it written in?

Looks interesting, but I can't say until I have a try.

Processing, it's converted to pure java from that. I love java but I'm not a fan of it's syntax so this clears it up pretty well. Also speeds up writing process with some very nice built in functions for drawing and all that fun stuff. Well I could upload a zip with the current build of it, but I think I'll just run it as an applet inside a webpage, I'll definately post when that happens. Although email does wonders until that happens.

When I saw the topic, I thought I'd be expecting a open-source 2-D sidescroller, standalone version of Soldat.

Maybe not, but I'm intrigued by what you've done so far. :)

Ok I just released a new build: 0.0.2

New Features:
  • It has texturing of polygons(no limit on them)
  • Scenery can be in from of, or behind player.
  • Zoom works with camera to do realtime zoom based on movement/speed.
  • Polygons can be scripted to move.
  • Collision detection needs to be updated for the moving polygons but works..somewhat :)
  • Explosions
  • Background gfx

Be on the lookout for the next version, and by the way, GFX credit goes to vtt and Michal afaik.

Pretty cool but has hella bugs. I'd get them fixed up before doing too much. Plus it took ages to load, is that normal?

Yeah, I'm aware of the bugs. It's just I would rather get my idea down and (semi)functional then improve on it, you know what I mean? Ehh, depending on whether or not you have java up already it could depend. For me(linux) its about a 2 second load time, so I couldn't say.

Could be good, keep at it.

I'd like to see some original scenery/textures though.  Not just stuff taken from Soldat.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is
still a beautiful world.  Strive to be happy.

Wake me up when you reach alpha build.

Sorry, I mean.. I'm sure it'll be great. But anybody can start a project and there isn't exactly a huge deal for people to look at.

Good luck with it though..

If you're going to post updates, you'll need to bump the thread. And the zip for your current build is bugged.
