In the old forums, I always thought my maps were better than yours, and "why does he get the spotlight," "I can shade better," and various other novice mapmaker thoughts. Your foolproof CTF layouts always made me envy you. I could never get anything to work that well, yet you churned out CTFs maybe once every two weeks or so.

Here I am, also three years into mapping, and still, I can't get one good CTF map. I've tried everything, from a notebook of layouts, to studying default maps, and even drawing layout diagrams circuitry style. Yet I still can't get it right.

Here's my question for you, and I hope you see it before you go on your extended vacation. How the hell do you do it?

Social life. Ain't it a killer? ;)

I could be long and emo now, how were you one of the mappers I've looked up to from the start, and you were the one that answered my very noobish questions in the beginning of it all, but I'll keep it short. Thank you, thank you for all you've done: the maps, the help, the administration / moderating and last but not least, for succeeding with my perverted T-Shirt idea.

's sad that we never talked all that much though. Good luck with your studies, have fun drinking between exams, and do drop by a few times, ahkay? ;)

I never was a fan of realisty, but I guess we all have to wake up sometime. I remember you well from the old forums. You were always one of these "whatever he says, it's right" kinda guys. I sure will miss your inputs. Which, all in all, is a funny thing, 'cause I never really missed you until now :) I had completely forgotten about you, but now that you've decided to say goodbye, it feels kinda empty.

As a fellow forumer stated above, "it's always a shame to see an old forumer go"(or something like that). I think so to. You're definitely a soldatforums veteran..
I wish you best of luck in the future, even thuough you're a uni kid ;) I'll be looking forwarsd to your next post.

So long, mate, and thanks for all of it..
You were always an idealistic forumer.

How the hell do you do it?

I never drew any map concepts. I imagine the basic layout and look'n'feel of a map in my head, then I create it with blank polygons. More shape details just get added during this process until finally the map's layout is done. Close to the end or after that, I take a long look at the map overview, then I decide whether I go on or not. 2/3rd of all the maps ive started creating were discarded after doing so. In case I go on, I first add the shading then the spawns, then playtest it, and afterwards (in case I dont discard it after playtesting, which happens very rarely after a map has survived my look at the layout) I add sceneries and improve the looks.
At the very end, I add waypoints or ask skilled waypointers to do so, cause most of the bot paths ive set myself proofed to be totally crappy.

To sum it up: Depending on what type of creative person you are, I wouldnt recommedn studying other maps (except if youre doing a remake) or planning/drawing sketches. Whenever you got a spontaneously occuring idea about a new map, try to realize it, and it will usually turn out far better than any map you plan like an architect. This is about everything I can tell you to answer your question.

Keep in mind that this is the usual "way" I did maps, it might not be working like that for others ;)

But he deserves his own topic!

I disagree, why should he have his own topic over anyone else.
