Here is my first released screenshot of a game I've been working on for around five months now. Heavily inspired by Soldat, the camera and shooting is similar. It is written entirely in java and the map shown here is VirtualTT's tw_village. How is it running tw_village you may ask? I've used iDante's pms parser to make a pms to xml converter. There is no release yet since I want to wait until it is more ready for an alpha. There are main gameplay elements not shown here that I would like to keep a secret until closer to its release- to prevent creaming.
I am looking for mainly large maps (think tw) to be used as default in the game, although there may be uses for smaller ones also. I have written a mapeditor myself, but I realized it would be a better route to use polyworks and then convert the maps and edit them with my personal one for fine tuning since it is nowhere near as powerful as polyworks.
By the way there is a mod running on here that is native to soldat but I lost the name...my apologies otherwise you would be mentioned also.
I am doing this for three reasons,
one: I run linux and I could not get Soldat to work well with my hardware.
two: Have been interested in game design for years
three: I am planning on using this game as an example of what I can do for the UW-Stout school so they accept me into their game design course.
If you have maps or graphics that you'd be willing to let me use it would be a great help. Please pm me if you do.

Are the pikachu's with guns just placeholders or is that actually something you are going for?
Because a pokemon themed 2D shooter would be awesome :)

Something I'm going for. Right now there are two sprite choices, mario or pikachu. I want to further this by having teams of the mario type(luigi, peach) and pokemon type(charmander, bulbasaur) and probably more at some point through no promises.

Whoa nice! Any chance of releasing the source? It'd be neat to get a group effort into making your java Soldat clone awesome.

And hmm, are you not currently rendering textures? And, if I may ask, which java library are you using for the map rendering?

Not sure yet, at some point probably. And no, I am thinking about adding in that option, but as it is I am getting 20fps, my graphics card is shit, so I'd have to wait for new hardware to even consider it. Everything is passed through jogl/opengl.

Here is an update on progress. I am writing a game server for which you can see me playing on with myself here. What you can do on the server currently:
Move, shoot, use jetpack, use grappling arm, pickup healthpacks/guns/attachments.

What is new in the game I have not incorporated into server as of yet:
Vehicles- they are made of xml files where you can create wheels, propellors, polygons, distance prismatic and revolute joints(think motors). I currently have two cars a centipede type vehicle and a helicopter although it is designed in a way that ading vehicles is simple in a text editor. You can shoot from vehicles but they are currently limited to one occupant although by design others could "ride" on them. Each piece has its own health along which when depleted will start on fire and then explode. The whole vehicle will explode if too much damage is done. With the helicopter you can use the grapple to pick up other vehicles or soldiers and drop them to there death or smash them. A Grapple can be used from inside any vehicle. I plan on adding and refining the vehicles more before incorporating them with the server.
The players can now do backflips and call in airstrikes.
There is now a dummy render of textures, these will be fixed once I can figure out how the pms files describe them.
There are now zombies and kittens.
There is a dummy fire which I will replace with a true particle engine at some point.


VirtualTT has kindly allowed me to use his maps/graphics in my game and the map shown is village as before.

What I am in need of are graphics for sprites, weapons/bullets, and to overlay on vehicles. Also any mapmakers who do not mind their maps being used- full credit will be given for any content.

I am getting closer and closer to an alpha release, I will set up a website when that time comes. Until then please leave any questions or comments here or pm me.

I'd really like to see the code for your java .pms parser. Would it be possible for you to post at least just that snippet?

Why you dont tell what weapons are there are they Standard ak m4  or Futiristic CRAP ?
And yeah Airstrike and all this is awesome

Smiluu and Monsteri- thanks I'll have fun with those. SoldatFire: I don't understand the pity part. Soldats a great game, this is just something else-  Weapons will be varied, you can set different atrributes to them eg for shotgun effect this like would be added to the file for it: <setShotgun id="2" shells="6"></setShotgun> and the files are specified by the maps. So for different levels you could have different weapon sets although as it is only one is being used and I used a few others for testing. I'll probably make a few more at some point.

So I decided today to release a small demo so people can try out the game play. There is a windows and linux build, I could make a mac one if someone requests it- as long as you tell me what the hell the "Contents" folder is. Here is the website: solitary entwinement,
tell me what you think of the website also. I want to add a message board and I will be releasing more "demo" builds to try and get some insight. But please keep in mind that this is just a demo, be prepared to ctr alt delete and kill it if you play for a while. I am currently working on a server, and have just gotten synchronization of vehicles over lan. It's always a 90% thing, but I feel like in the next few months we could see a server running and some vehicle battles (:, it's too soon to tell but anyways some constructive criticism would be nice.
