Only good reason for removing a map from the pool I can think of is the similarity between some of them. For instance, Cobra and Snakebite. There's a major difference in gameplay that takes place in the center area, but the entire layout implies they both come from the same blueprint.

To me they don't feel like the same map at all, but I see what you mean.
I think the best solution would be to fix the texture and polybugs on all current default maps instead of removing them.
Here's just an example, you can see theese ugly 'edges' on almost all maps.

I agree and we'll work on that for next version. :)

I can't understand how removing maps would help this game.

SCTFL can have its own map pool, end of the story.

I think we should ask why it is so hard for custom maps to become default since even the default ones are not that good?

NOT THAT GOOD? > Good but just not suitable for competitive arena.

I don't know why they even have to be.

all the maps mention in the initial post are great public maps, i don't see the point in this suggestion. as utkesmer said, removing them would do nothing. like the initial post stated, only single clans play some maps. this however doesn't hurt anybody as these clans in the competitive scene are way too small to make an impact and these cases only generate versatility which i personally like

The premise of this post accounts only for the competitive scene. You talked about abandoned maps, but that does not apply to pubs. It is not a big problem if those maps were abandoned by the competitive scene. Some are better for gathers, some are better for pubs, which is a good thing because both aspects must be accounted. I remember that zakath had a statistic of all the pub servers he was running, with time played * players, and all the maps were roughly the same, with exception of ctf_Guardian that was lower.

The nonexistence of the slots was also commented, but you said that it was easier to add a new map than graphically improve an old one. Well, the current maps we know that are balanced, fun, and work great. New maps would have to be tested and either work as the one that it is "replacing", which would make it almost like a remake, or have a different and unique gameplay, so it can be added without removing the old one.

About ctf_Snakebyte Almost every time that sctfl statistic is shown, they forget to put the %. We change the least played maps in the competitive scene because we see improvements in them and they won't change much in the championships. Also, Soldat has now several types of new polygons that can be explored and used to improve the gameplay.
I can see that your suggestion is genuine, but I do not understand how removing maps will help the game.

@homeofgods.: we are focusing in fixing the polybugs, we did a bunch in the last 2 versions. ctf_Guardian is already in progress.

What I truly love about Soldat is the diverse gameplay with distinct groups of players which mix little to not at all. We have the RPG and zombie players that love to develop their stats and mash through hordes of zombies, we have the focussed pro gamer that only attends to gather matches and clan wars and tournaments like the SCTFL, the pub gamer and the KO community (and a lot of other small gamemodes that I will not list here). Every sub-community plays on different sets of maps, and that's what's so great about it.

Having more maps is simply better! The less maps you have, the less diversity you have, and little diversity generates boredness. Boredness is what everyone fears so much in this community: people jumping off. We should do it the other way around and add more maps to the game. Why should we reduce the number of maps? The times of old modems are far gone. You do not need a minute to download a map anymore. What reason is there really? Maps being "abandoned"? Well, how can you tell? As long as there is a single player playing this map - online or offline - it is worth it to keep it. Because on the long run, we want to create a most satisfying experience for the player, and if the map ain't unoriginal or bugged, but original and fun to play, we shall keep it.

Suum cuique.

Indeed, further thinking about it I have to agree even though I'd still personally demolish quite a few maps because I personally would make Soldat as suited to competitive games as possible.

Snakebite has never been in the group of the least played map and it's not only about statistics. It's the only map that has caused as much discussion on SCTFL and the general view was obviously against the remake. And like you said earlier, the remake should either work like the original or become a completely new map, and in this case I strongly feel as if an original map was replaced by another "original" map. I also don't like the idea of the new polygon types used in old, original maps. This is what happened to Snakebite, too.
