For some weird reason I never got to watch this movie before although I knew from an early age that it was one of the major titles and although I'm older than the movie it's not by much.
Considering how many quotes from "Predator" were used in Soldat I also think that it could be interesting to have a discussion on the topic. Also I had the predator creature as a toy while growing up. Kind of funny really how I could overlook seeing it.
I think that we're currently going through an extreme counter-reaction against the kind of pumped up male heroes we used to have in movies such as Predator, Rocky and Rambo. Although personally I do like complexity and diversity in itself I find it absurd how the concept of a perfectly straight and macho hero has come to be seen as an obstacle against such dimensions. Also I think that society in general needs role models who represent violent courage, who can stand up for themselves and who's more than willing to commit acts of retribution where such actions are fit. I suppose that American patriotism wouldn't come out as such a good thing while USA is being lead by a black communist, but the traditional values from Hollywood should still be very marketable, regardless if they are seen as patriotic or not.
I think I'm going to continue watching the follow-ups now.
