Variation on a theme :)
« on: October 01, 2006, 01:46:08 am »
This, ladies and gents, is my first map. It looks like crap, but it conveys the idea of the modification on CTF I'm going for (see if you can figure it out).

Figure it out yet ? Alright, if you're too freaked out to download something so horrendous onto your computer, here's the premisis : both teams get the LAW and M79 (which you may want to change under your weapons settings if you want to get the feel I"m goin' for). Combined with the non-explosive divider in the middle, you end up with a heck of a lot of gunfire between sides. The thing is, anyone going to get the other flag has to deal with a lot of fire (FF is on). This would (in theory) force both teams into co-ordinating with their flag runners.

Edit: Please recall that this map is not waypointed yet, if anyone would like to teach the bots to shoot through walls then work on this, I cordially invite you :P

It looks like crap, ...
Agreed...

So basically this is a stalemate map even worse than ctf_Death? Err.... me not likes.
Though I'll credit you for this rather creative idea, and that you made a really good post describing the gameplay. But your screenshot above looks like it doesn't have any texture rendered on it.

Meh, I'll give it a download...

The way the divider is set up it's impossible for the red to get a shot off without making themselves really easy targets.

First of all, there are no textures because this was a quickee and I've no clue how to make it look decent w/ them. I'd rather have map that looks like crap that takes an hour, as opposed to a crappy map that takes a day (with textures).

I have absolutely no idea what you mean about red side not being able to shoot, could you elaborate on that ?

Since the blue guys are higher up they get an absolute advantage in killing the red people, and vice versa.

Putting a texture do your map doesn't take a day...

First of all, this is the first time I've ever made a map and I'm struggling to use the basic features of Polyworks (it took me half an hour to get colour poly-fill to work). So there :P

I'm going to just swap out the old file up there and put in the new one, it should be all 'textured' for you .

Ah.. It looks alot better now, but as Toumaz pointed out, it's pretty unfair for alpha since bravo can just nade spam the tunnel. Not very bad for first map tho' :P

And here, you amazingly good at pointing-out problem people, is the new and updated version. Sans the blue team advantage :)

Keeping in mind what Mothafix said, I changed the layout of the middle-run area so that neither team has an advantage (or disadvantage). Also, to keep people from sitting at the top and dropping grenades, I've littered the paths down on both sides with colliders. I'm not sure if this is the best way of doing things, except for some reason reverse visibility on Polyworks isn't working.

I also put in a Stat Gun at the top of the map, mainly to keep people on their toes. Wouldn't want any lead-fingered peeps spraying around, now would I ?

Oh, and I've been playing this with all weapons enabled, it seems to work quite well.

if you were forced to add two more words to your topic's title, $5 bets you would've put "of Paganini." ;D

that's a crazy idea. If bots could actually MAINTAIN their path while firing at enemies ( ::) ), this would be amazingly well for bot matches. I think the flags should be situated at ground-level, tho'; coming up and down the chutes and having to then fight your way upwards is just too much, heh.

I see no point.

When a red guy gets into the middle shaft while having the flag, the flag will get blown to the reds side if the blues manage to blast the escaping red guy.

And vise versa aswell on this.

-numgun : That's the way any game of CTF works, you forget that no matter what you do, the flag will get blown away towards the enemy. Unless you do the smart thing and try to work your way to the enemy's flag, that way you still have a hold on their side.

On a similar, but related point, one could just pick up the flag and throw it through the divider. But people won't let that happen because this is more of a strategic map. You need to plan out what you want to do :) (that's why there's only  one way to each side).

In addition to that, I'm uploading a new version with invisible polygons instead of those dang colliders :|

Edit: DAMN YOU INVISIBLE POLYGONS ! DAMN YOU !
