Networking Problems

Hi, before I start, I wanna say that this has nothing to do with soldat, I just need some help.

Okies. Today I bought a brand new laptop, and I decided to hook it up to the desktop computer to copy my music and important files (*cough*porn*cough*) to the laptop. I tried to network it, but to no avail. Both computers run Windows XP SP2, and both are connected to each other (ethernet to ethernet) using what I think is a cross-over cable. I have a blue cord that was described as a Cat. 5 cable, and I have a crossover cable that is yellow (came with my modem...) I ran the "Networking Wizard" and did what I could, clicked finish and restarted the computers, but nothing happened! I have no idea what I'm doing, so can sum1 help me please!!!

I was told by a computer person (who unfortunately couldn't help me...) maybe he was wrong...anyway, what have I done wrong in this sequence? I really want to get my files over to my other PC

Get/make your own crossover cable.

It COULD be a crossover cable, but it COULD use some funky standard, and thusly is of no use to you.
