General bad attitude in the community
« on: October 20, 2006, 08:38:24 am »
There seems to be an awfully bad plague of disgruntled attitude floating under the surface thats going around lately. People being 'miffed' at something yet never saying why, imagining an impenetrable barrier of fisting that'll disregard their opinions in the blink of an eye perhaps.

It ain't like that, son.

This is a message to all ... the forums is 'not' run on a dictatorship. We have made decisions on our own opinions when first needing to set up all the bases of the forums ASAP, and made minor mistakes here and therefor whatever reason. We just like to get the job done when needed, but that ain't how it really is...

...how is it then? Well, quite simply, if anyone has a problem, talk about it.
You want something changed? ask for it.
If enough people want something changed, made, removed, or generally done, it's as simple as discussing and getting a number of peeps opinions behind you so that we know the majority is cool with it. Otherwise, obstreperous moaning will achieve nothing.

eg: i've seen whinging from clan-players the past few months, saying that the beta team is full of peeps who don't know their arse from a clan war and that the balance needs tweaking in their favour. I, and perhaps others, begged the barstewards to come and sort out the balance months ago in the weapons discussion forum to pre-empt the next release. In their generalised ignorance, they thought it best not to. "Too many noobs" apparently.

So what did I do?

I asked Mike if we could get some new guys in to tweak up the balance, then the eager beta testers already 'in the scene' went hunting for good candidates to recruit. It's as simple as stating your opinion in unison to get a chance to change things on the forums, or indeed in Soldat. Ya'll wanted bug fixes, so guess what Mike's doing? No guarantees he'll get them all (I imagine all can't be fixed), but god bless his cotton socks, he tries and listens.

And please, try to appreciate the efforts of people who are only here to help. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but some people go out of line. Moderators deleting your posts or locking your topics? In their eyes, they're just keeping the forums clean to a standard. Want that standard changed? could always talk about it... it's up to you to set the standard, and them to keep it. And me to confuse you. And Bricks to fist him.

Beta testers who, year after year, have thrown great effort and discussion into the balance.
The thoroughness that went into 1.3's balance testing was unparalleled; organised clan wars, mixing and matching players, throwing groups of weapons against others day after day, each day with a minor tweak for weeks on end.
And bugs that still remain to this day falls on the heads of beta testers, little understanding that most - if not all - bugs were found, but Michal simply cannot (yet) repair them all. For this, many consider the beta testers ignorant to all things and twats.

And for another example, Enesce. Shady past, maybe, but the amount of sheer effort and time he's put into the server code, the numerous people he's helped, and the hackers he's helped bring down surely deserves great credit and at least some respect. And some of you grant him that. Otherwise he receives equal and uneducated blind paranoia, rumours and ignorance from fools.

And Bricks ...dear lord, for all the effort he's put into this for you and me. A forum that doesn't go down for 3 days at a time, servers and statistics played on for years, and lord knows what he hasn't helped in. Even after all that, some people have still found a way to show no appreciation, and on occasion worse.

Even me, the guy that does pretty much nothing except try to listen and/or get people communicating, solving minor quibbles and things on the forums from time to time, seem to have found myself in bad favour in some people for god knows whatever reason.

...so please, if anything bothers you in this little lovely little gunmetal blue forum - or indeed Soldat itself - it's merely a matter of stating your opinion, discussing it, and coming to a conclusion with other members, your friendly mods, and ze admins. From there, things can change to whatever most of you want from this forum, and even this game.

So, clamorous gay whining = out , constructive group-wanking = in. Capiché?

I for one have one simple outlook on these forums, and I used to, on arrival to these forums, post anything that I could in order to get a higher post count. Now, I've grown to almost only post in the Lounge. I'm sure all newcomers did that, maybe you say you didn't, but Soldat Forums was my first forum community, I've learned a lot here and I'd like to say I've matured quite a bit over the three years I've been with the forums. Now days I don't post hardly at all unless it's either intelligent, or I have something to add to the topic.
I say we all just relax a bit, and take a few deep breaths.

Well said, well said. I completely agree, as I'm sure by now you are aware, what with my own post of support in that other topic.

Just realised that I didn't illustrate who we're recruiting for tweaking the balance this version; Respectable generally non-biased clan members/leaders, gather admins, league/tournement admins and the like, all generally active and experienced in their field for finding and correcting any and all faults in clan-war balance.

(Don't ask to join - we'll find you...)

While our moderator system isn't exactly perfect, it's a hell of a lot better than any other forum community that I'm active in.  Morons who do nothing but corrupt the community are quickly dealt with, it's kept up and running constantly, and best of all, you guys all know what you're doing.  For all of this I am grateful.  Especially since I came from the Diseased Productions, which has quite effectivley been n00bed, spammed, and corrupted to death.  The only two admins there are Weasel and Mikhail, the leaders of the Thing Thing project, and only recently was LORDK added as a moderator.  A transition to a more controlled environment was entirely welcome to me, and still is.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.

I will agree with the thought of the forums having a negative attitude.

70% of the time is spent smiting
30% (if that) is appluads.

A lot of the time I have seen people get smitten for no reason.  This happens to me all the time.

I am very glad you are trying to find out what's wrong on these forums.  You are a good admin Ru.

agreed.  they just cause problems and waste their time.  Most of the time they end up coming back anyway.
