Playing over LAN help.
« on: November 27, 2006, 11:38:52 am »
Hi,

Before I start I have already looked through similar topics and they have not helped. Right, I have 2 computers in my room, linked via LAN and I know the LAN does work because I have played Age of Empires over it. But when I try to use the two computers to play each other on Soldat I keep getting problems.

On the computer i start the "server" on, I have Lan and register in lobby server ticked on options but the other computer doesn't seem to find the game when searching local games.

I then tried just entering the IP adress of the other computer, but still it couldn't pick it up. Also on the computer that starts the server, once the game begins I get a constant amount of errors at the top of the screen saying cannot connect to this and it cannot connect to that (as if it is trying to connect to the internet lobby).

Any help/idea would be much appreciated,

Thanks.

You say that you ticked the lobby server box. Did you set your server to LAN?

Theres three boxes isn't there? I ticked LAN and Register in lobby server but left Internet unticked. By the way, I don't actually have a server so to speak, I just cliked "start game".

Thanks.

I've tried playing soldat over LAn in my school too. And we couldn't make it work. Now I'm in  highschool and they use a program called DeepFreeze. ASnd they don't have the GPU drivers so I can't try it there.

Try making A soldat dedicated server then. It's not that hard. And there are surely some threads that could help you. Then just enter your "server" ip. Maybe that would work

Dedicated server? Wouldn't that require a connection to the internet? That's not available on one of the computers.

Thanks will.

No, dedicated server doesn't require internet. And LAN is kinda broken unless you use the dedicated server.

As far as I know, LAN games don't register in any of the lobby servers so there is no way for the other computers to know that there is a server going on.  You have to know the IP and port of the local computer who is running the server.

As of 2.5.2, LAN semi-works and has servers showing up:

- Fixed server appearance in local servers request (note for client: for non-default ports you must type the port in the port box and then request)

It doesn't use the lobby server for this, just a broadcast over the LAN... no idea if it works in complex LAN setups, though.

Ok, thanks guys. I know my IP adress, but over LAN you get assigned a sort of LAN IP adress different to the internet one. Which one should I use?

Also, how do I find out my port number?

Thanks.

for LAN play you need to use the LAN IP.

the port number is 23073 unless you changed it to something else.  If you changed it, you would know what it is so you're probably using 23073
