This could be a stupid idea, but would it be too hard to implement a pop-open map? You press a key (probably M), and a larger map opens. You can see your teammates' positions, as well as the whole map, but only in three colors. Black and white map, and red, blue, yellow, or green teammate icons (probably just dots), depending on what team you are on.
