Internet: and the Conduct on it
« on: January 07, 2007, 10:54:20 pm »
I've always thought about this...  On the internet, there are many sites.  Some professional ones, some used for entertainment.  But for now, we will stick with the entertainment side of things.

In these sites that are non-professional, like here, (it doesn't even have to be a site, can be online conduct in an online game)

There are many people who(it seems to me) take their internet and especially their gaming lives (what little life a gamer's life offers) FAR too seriously.  They think they have to act all cool in front of total strangers online.

You honestly think what a total stranger is going to think of you?

I'm not saying to act like a fool, and spam and talk like: omg so im liek guna kill u ***.  Spelling like a 5th grader who drank a few too many Kool-aids...
I'm saying that some people really need to learn to lighten upon the internet.  Especially online games...
Correct if I'm wrong, but a game is supposed to be FUN.

Agree?  Disagree?  Discuss.

The internet isn't a game.

Therefore, it can be taken seriously.

Being the internet, I can criticize anyone I want to for their spelling too. Being alive and having 10 fingers and a keyboard means you should be able to type sentences that others can understand.

EDIT: Yeah, some people take the interwebs a little too seriously. I haven't really fully understood the whole 'act cool to be popular everyone love me now' thing, but then again, that's why I'm here.

Lets not start spamming it up guys. Anyway the internet is just like everything else in peoples lives, it can be used for practical purposes, relaxation, or for negative purposes like lashing out at people. Though not all people that are jerks on the net are simply lashing out, some people just are jerks...  The net is all in how you use it, like any from of entertainment, gotta know where you stand in it and all that jazz.

You honestly think what a total stranger is going to think of you?

I don't really completely get what you're trying to say there at all, could you please clarify?

You got me thinking about Enders Game, specifically the part where Peter utilizes the internet (or some surprisingly accurate form of the internet for a book written in the 70's and earlier) to take over the world.

So I suppose what I'm saying is that developing a likable online persona is important. Especially since at some point in time your enemies may scour the internet for stuff that makes you look like a d-bag. I'm sure about half of the stuff I say on these forums will come back to bite me in the ass. Only time will tell :D
