Ninja Rope
« on: June 22, 2006, 08:43:06 pm »
Hi all!

Silly topic, i know; will never be implemented.. but the talk may be fun.

To code this, you'd have to look into the physics of springs and create a rope with a series of nodes connected by arcs of course.

Now, this idea would involve a lot of modification to the whole Soldat code probz, and mr. MM doesn't want too much work on his head.

Would it enrich or ruin the Soldat experience?

All the old maps would be abused, all the maps that could be abused must be re-mapped or replaced..

I think it would detract, although it would be pretty nifty.

Yah.

I do not like this idea.  Because of jets.  Could kill climb maps.

Think of maps where there are no jetfuel, then the grappling hook could be replaced instead,

Why the hell would you make a rope out of springs?

No I don't like this. This would be too a drastic change to soldat, and I like soldat the way it is. It would be pretty pointless, cause we have jets. And why would it be enabled on climbing maps? That would make it easy.

To be quite honest, i don't like this idea either...

That why i wanted to see the response.

And matey, check into some physics... you implement a rope by using a series of springs, or rigid body arcs (even springs with an infinite stiffness; hooke's law). This goes into rag doll physics...
It could be implemented.
Soldat uses Verlet Integration for motion.

Do a search for 'Advanced Character Physics'.
It's not to difficult to get your head around if you're physics/maths minded.

This is what MM looked at whilst programming soldat.

Many disadvantages to this method, but MM's done alright with Soldat.

How would you use this So called "Grappling Hook"?

Would you have to press a button, use it as a secondary wepon(point and click). It might be fun to use as a mod, otherwise it would be very abusive, and think of all the annoying people just grappling to everything.....

i dunno about this....sometimes its a pain in some INF maps when you have no boost and you need to get onto a ledge to score, but other than that i dont think this is really needed.
Your acting like your having a duel and your opponent gets a pistol and you get a spork.
Isn't that pretty much what it is? I dunno wtf a spork is, I suppose it's way weaker than the pistol since you compared that to this.
