No one joins my game
« on: February 19, 2007, 06:01:41 pm »
Okay, I go to "start game" I create a game with no bots. I get a message saying it's in the lobby server, and I wait 15 minutes, but no one joins it!

I have a wireless router.

Just make a regular game and beef up the time limit...

make a realistic game! there are so few so lots of people will join i guess. All though its better to have a dedicated server running 24/7. Why dont you join a game your self?

Because I wouldn't be the admin.

But is it possible to make a game/server that I can play in and that is public?

Or am I missing the point...

No one joins because:

1) Many/most people simply look for the most active and most packed servers of their favorite game mode. With no people, yours will be at the very bottom of the list.
2) You have not established your server. Why would people join anyway? Lots of people don't even bother to change the server name, filling the lobby with a number of generic server titles.
3) Sometimes it'll take a bit before the game shows up in the lobby. You can type the admin command /lobby to help register it so that it will appear, but this is not guaranteed to work all the time.
4) Your server sounds as though you're running it from your PC, and most will not join or stay in a server with a great amount of lag as yours likely does. Only way to "fix" this is to just rent a dedicated server.

Well, hell with renting servers.

I'm not made of money. And also, my computer and network are as fast as like T1, maybe faster.

John, read the stickies in this board about how to run a server.

The "Start Game" way to run a server is meant for mainly two situations:
1) playing with bots
2) playing with people on the same network as you

If you want to play with people on the internet, you should:
1) run a server using the dedicated server software and follow the proper steps to set up the server and your network for it
2) join other peoples' servers run from proper servers, not home connections (they will run much better for other people than if they play on one hosted on your home connection)
3) rent a server

Okay, is it because of the network, or because no one is choosing my game?

I'm 80% certain it's partly because of your router's firewall, given that you are on a wireless connection. You need to forward your server's listen port to the server's internal ip on your router before anyone can connect to your game.
