Mine's around a constant 65, unless I'm playing on a custom map that lags a bit; then it drops down to around 40.

Since I have a pretty shat computer I usually get a 60-100 FPS on default maps, maybe 60-80 on custom maps.

^ What the hell? My computer runs Soldat fine, the FPS is around 65 or so, but that's considered bad even though my specs aren't? 448 MB Ram, (The Integrated ATI X200 causes it to hog some of it, ugh) and a 2 GHz AMD 3500+ Sempron Processor? :-\

And yes, to Dascoo, our computers are nearly the same. :D

Note that in the original post, his 400+ fps is only rendering a blue screen with nothing on it.... thats not hard for a computer to do.

As smooth as your monitor refresh rate is.

If you play on 100 Hz, and FPS is 100, you see every frame. If FPS is, lets say 200, you see every second frame. And it feels as smooth as with 100 FPS. If you have 1000 FPS, you only see every 10th frame on the screen.

When the computer renders more frames than the display can refresh per second, the computer forces display to start viewing new frame eve if the old one is not finished yet. That makes the game look fuzzy, so you should cap the FPS to the refresh rate your display uses on 640*480 resolution.

FPS capping can be done by enabling Vertical sync, better known as V-Sync. When this is enabled, the computer wont start rendering new frame before the current one is shown by your display. Game looks more clear and feels more smooth, alot nicer to play.. A bit off-topic.

Ontopic: As I use V-Sync, I get static 75 FPS. If I disable V-Sync, I get around 150-200 FPS on stantard maps.

Actually everything above 25-30 FPS looks like 25-30 FPS, because of how human eyes and brain work. Higher refresh rates are useful mostly because sometimes frame rate may drop significantly because of many polygons and other objects in a game scene.

I can tell when I'm getting 60 fps instead of 30fps though...30fps Is not very smooth to me :\
And my specs -
Intel Duel Core E6300 @ 1.86GHZ
2GB DDRII @ 667MHZ  4-4-4-12
Ati Radeon X1950XT 256MB

Depends on what you are used to. When I played CS few years ago with poor comp, I could get 30-35 FPS, first it felt terrible, then I was able to play with it easily.

Then I got new comp, and got 100FPS almost all the time, it was great and smooth. Then the comp died, and I had to start using old one. I can say that 30-35 FPS was TERRIBLE after I was used to the constant 100 FPS. I could not play with it. Tok me few weeks to get used to it, then I did not even see that there was difference between 30 and 60 FPS.

Here in Europe, we have electricity rated on 50 Hz, from the socket. Some people (including me) can see that the lightbulbs are "flashing" fast, 50 times per second. It is very hard to notice. I have heard that some people can see the same in USA, where they got 60 Hz rated electricity network.

You can notice the difference easily on the computer screen, between 30 FPS and 60 FPS, there is even a program made for it, called FPS Compare

And what if I have an LCD screen? Or if any monitor could handle 1000 Hz of refresh rate? And our eyes could capture that much frames per second? :)
