My system goes woooooooosh
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:16:58 am »
Just for the record, Its been a few days since I put XP Pro x64 back on my system and it seems to be getting faster XD. Even with one of the cheaper x64 processors, I am now on the fastest computer I have ever seen. The OS boots in like less than 10 seconds, the gui doesn't need to load, its already there, opening several programs at once means nothing to the processor.

I am a happy puppy! (inside joke)

Vista sux.

Two weeks later.

"Man, I run disk defragmenter, scan for viruses, trojans and worms, run disk cleanup and several other utilities, check for spyware and adware, every day, just to keep my system healthy! It only takes two hours to run it all, too!"

A month later.

"Man.. no matter how much I defragment, my PC still seems to be running slow."

A month and two weeks.

"AHHH ME HATE XP BLEHAGHBLAGHBLEB."

Solution?

Ubuntu.

My system goes woosh everytime, all the time. And its only getting faster. That's the coolest part about Linux. The more you use it, the faster it gets. If you are on your PC several hours a day, your system will run beyond compare.

And there is nothing like running Neverwinter Nights and Tremulous, both full, 3D games, at the same time, windowed, with no performance decrease at all.

Not to mention, open source software is the shit.

Lapis Lazuli, $20 says I can keep it just as fast for a month.

Oh, and I have Ubuntu running on hard drive #2. So far the windows gui responds faster. Haven't gotten a chance to test processor intensive programs on linux yet though.

I'd take you up on that, except there's no credible way for it to be proven.

haha that was perfect.   I clicked the button and first saw "My car...." then scrolled down a bit to see "does not..."  (the bottom of my browser window was between them)

To me, Ubuntu is like a much more efficient car, but this car can only make left turns.

ATI compatiblity is getting much better very quickly.  I've got an ATI in my laptop and haven't had any trouble at all with the latest version of ubuntu, it fixed a lot of things

If I were to switch over to Ubuntu, would there be a way to run .exe programs on it?

I use stuff like Civ4, Soldat, ventrilo, winamp, etc. I would be happy to switch to Ubuntu but I don't know anything about the program compatibility.

I actually have the same question as Xurol. I wouldn't mind at all switching to Ubuntu, but from the looks of it, it isn't able to run the executables that I use most of the time I'm on this computer. It's true that there are programs for Ubuntu to replace those that are most frequently used on Windows, but as far as I can tell, if you want to play a game on Ubuntu, and you've got an ATI card, you're screwed.

~ 90% of the programs you use in windows do not make a linux version
~ 90% of simple windows apps will work when ran from a emulator like wine
~ 10% of major apps (the equivalent of Adobe and Macromedia products) will work using an emulator
~ 10% of games work using a windows emulator

~ 98% of the programs you use in windows have an alternative in linux

You know the odds, the risk is yours.

(please correct if my figures are way off)

I'd use linux (I used to have it on my old laptop) but its just not compatible with any hardware that I own. So theres no use. I might dual-boot it on my new laptop (if linux is compatible with Compaq/HP laptops) when I fix the HDD (Tommorrow!! YAY!). FliesLikeABrick would be able to tell me more about it...I might PM him now!
